Just read this tip for saving oven cooking time when doing Jacket spuds.

Place a metal skewer through the middle of each potato, to reduce the cooking time by 'up to a quarter' !! Tip was printed on the back of my Tesco spud bag!

Thought it might be useful to someone like me, who doesn't like jackets done the in micro or slow cooker!

Personally I'd forget about all this turning off your TV or PC nonesense, you'll save an insiginficant amount of energy.

Your no.1 energy use is heating. Investment in cavity wall insulation, loft insulation, double glazing, heavy curtains will save you thousands.

Whatever you spend on this will usually come back to within 5-7 years.

I cannot understand why people keep going on about turning off their TV, while their walls remain un-insulated. Like someone who liveson cream buns saying they're going to loose weight by using low fat milk.

Because if you live in a rented house you are not going to go to the expense of insulating walls loft etc when it is not your house. And as Mr T says "every little helps"

We cannot get our walls insulated. the way it is built means there is no cavity! We did get the loft reinsulated though.

Like broomstick says: some of us live in rented accomodation. Personally spending money on a house I don't own wouldn't bother me too much if I could be sure of being able to live there long enough to gain the savings but when you're on a contract with two months notice, you never know when you'll have to leave.

Turn the water temperature down. I can never understand why we spend good money on heating water when filling a bath only for people to add cold water to cool it down. Your water does not have to be so piping hot you need to cool it down. If I have really greasy pans I will boil the kettle or turn the water up (combi boiler) to deal and then turn it down again. Another thing which I never use is the warmstart on the boiler, this is when the water in your pipes is kept warm so instantly getting hot water when the tap is turned on. I can wait a few seconds for it to heat up.
I agree that this is a good idea however, I just want to mention that you are not supposed to have your water heating at below 60 degrees because of risk of bugs (I think it may be legionairres disease?) Having said that, the 60 degrees thing probably only applies if you have a hot water tank where the water is sitting around warm rather than if you have a combination boiler. Perhaps someone else knows...?

    re: water temperature,

we have the type of heater where, like a shower, it heats the water as it comes through our system. We've therefore turned the temperature control for the water as high as it will go, on the basis that, while, yes, we have to put some cold water in to cool it down, the cold water is also cheaper than hot water - if filling a bath at the correct temperature the water still has to be heated up to that temperature, and paid for, so if we have it on as hot as possible, and run cold water in to cool it down (that costs less) we use less water that's been heated. if that makes any sense.

maybe we've still got it wrong.. what do people think?

Kethry, LOL at how you poked that copy of Delia's Christmas Collection out of line with the other books on the shelf just to add a visual emphasis to your OS credentials.:rotfl:
