  • I havent read the whole thread.....(its really long!)....so forgive me if this has been mentioned....

With regards to saving money with heating costs by using less heating or none at all, just remember that sometimes the costs of damage to the building or interior finishes may work out more than the savings.

If the temperature is kept warm throughout the house most of the time, this will help to prevent mould, damp, condensation, frost damage etc etc etc. because the core of the building never gets chance to get cold.

So whilst the Gas bill might be cheaper, does the bathroom need redecorating because of cold damage etc??

Have seen adverts on TV lately for Ariel I think it was, saying it can be used at 30 degrees now and is just as effective "using 40% less electricity".

Is it really true that 30 degree washes use 40% less elec than 40 degree washes?

my washing machines ,dial has no numbers on it....
    they have all faded away.

I was in tescos yesturday and they had gloves with no finger holes, they cost £5 (which I thought was expensive).

If anyone has a knitting pattern for fingerless gloves and a dog coat id be pleased.
    Kindness costs nothing :)

Brilliant Idea!!! I need two dog coats for my rescued staffies...they won't set foot outside if there is so much as a hint of a nip in the air (let alone any rain LOL!) I was going to buy coats  !!!!

I found this link that has a ton of patterns of all shapes and sizes....

Yes it is true. I have been washing in 30 degrees for some time with Surf which is usually cheaper than other makes. I have even found some stain come out better with the cooler wash, I guess it doesn't fix them in.

With the white wash I still do it on the longer wash but at 30.
  • I use 1 tablet of Asda's own bio and half a cup of washing soda at 40 degrees with good results but would really like to wash at 30 degrees.

Has anyone tried this using washing soda?
  • Spend every night in the pub getting !!!!ed -you'll save a fortune on gas and 'leccy and won't feel the cold when you get in.

I remember reading an article saying that those that pre pay for their electricity are charged more. (if I've read it correctly)

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/5310706.stm

Energywatch, along with charities Help the Aged and Child Action Poverty Group, warned that old people as well as the disabled are set to be the most affected by the higher gas and electricity prices.

As frequent users of prepaid meters, they are being charged even more than those billed on a quarterly basis, the organisations said.

Meter customers are being charged as much as £173 more for their gas, and their electricity bills are as much as £113 higher annually, the groups claimed.

Ebico (https://www.ebico.co.uk/) are a non profit gas and elctricity company. They charge all customers the same rates (apart from regional variation for electricity) regardless of what payment method they use. I think the reason for this is that it is usually the better off people who use the methods that get discounts and they are trying to be fairer.

A few pages back someone posted that their house was colder since they replaced carpet with laminate. Does any one else find this, because I am thinking of replacing my lounge carpet, on account of my 2 dogs (laminate seems so much more hygenic with dogs around!). I have electric night storage heaters, if that makes any difference.
    Thanks!
  • I have laminate and I'm not very pleased with it. The surface is not durable and if you drop something it tends to chip. Also, dogs paws are likely to slide - can you imagine the dogs being excited about something and running across the laminate - they would not be able to stop and would crash into the wall:eek: Also if doggies were to have an 'accident', unless the laminate was VERY well sealed, liquid might seep into the cracks.;)

I'd go for thermoplastic tiles or lino
