sammy, I had a open fire 3 years ago and it ruined our carpet,
it kept spitting everywhere and the bricks were so black that it looked dirty.

we then decided to get rid of it and got a new carpet, it was alot of work and alot of mess but when the fire was on it was lovely.

we closed up the chimney hole which stopped the draught we were getting.

Our last house had a open fire and I miss it so much :(

To deal with the spitting you need a fire guard, not one of those that you use for babies, it has a really fine mesh and fits just in front of the fire. This does cut out some of the heat however, so we only used it when puttin logs on the fire as they can often spit out. For when we were burning coal we would remove it - this is where the the hearth-rug comes into use. Get an old rug, it takes all the spits and protects the carpet, and can be rolled up in the summer and replaced with a better quality one / none at all.

There can be very few things that feel so satisfying and frugal as cooking toast / marshmallows by an open fire, or cooking baked potatoes / chestnuts in the embers below!

oooh do I miss my open fire.

I seem to spend all my time convincing family to turn lights off, even during the day:mad:
I am seriously thinking about buying them all pair of these slippers for christmas, only problem is, with 6 of us, it might take a few years to recoupe the costs:rolleyes:

  • sammy, when you buy a great for the fire make sure you get one with the front that sits under it. With this closed less air is pulled through so the fire burns more slowly. For years we had one without because it looked nice and we didn't really realise the difference a front would make. Now with a front drawer two logs and one shovel of coal will last all evening.

I'd love to use my open fireplace. It's huge and would heat the whole house. I've been told I have to have it lined now before I can use it though as there are new regulations. Is this true? The house is 200 years old but I have had the chimney swept last year even though we've never had a fire in there.

John I did but unfortunately these guys had a vested interest as their company also sold woodburners and installed them.
