Rebob wrote:If you are on a low income do a search for home energy efficiency grants. If you have wages of less than £15,050 p.a. you might qualify. We were told the other day that we are going to get central heating with a condensing combi boiler fitted as the majority of our storage heaters are over 20 years old.
give it a go, the worst is that they might say no!
The trouble with these low income energy efficiency grants is that if you are on a low income you can't afford to buy a house so you are stuck with whatever your landlord has put in (or not put in).0 -

when you cook your vegtables, boil all the veg together in one pan.
(less washing up too )
Also turn off the heat 5 minutes before you would normally - the veg, pasta, soup whatever will still carry on cooking. I do this with pasta and it turns out perfectly (I normally overdo it so for me this was a great tip!)[size=-2]Remember its nice to be nice and its good to share!

Our 3 dogs sleep in the kitchen with no heating and have done so since they were puppies! my OH says they dont need it too hot as its not healthy for them. They have blankets to snuggle into!;)
Some good tips here. Makes me realise how much energy we're wasting!
Am looking out for some fleecy blankets now!:DDo what you love :happyhear0 -
Forgot to mention that we are very lucky in that our Housing association has given us cavity wall insulation, extra loft insulation and replacement windows and doors! so we have a good start at saving energy!:DDo what you love :happyhear0

Just received a £200 electric bill for 3 months? Apparently its correct and we have been charged on the price before it went up. Luckily the gas for the same period was about 7 quid, I'm not looking forward to the winter bill.0

sorry if this as been asked or spoken about previous....
but as anyone worked out if its cheaper to light a room with candles.....or electric ?
what i mean in comparison.... say having the light on for 3 hours say.... compared with having a candle....
i have lots of smelly candles given to me anyway...and i have noticed you can pick them up so cheap.. now even the big huge church type ones...
because the way things are going with the price of electric..... i use a lot of electric.... as we have quite a few fish tanks.. down in the fish room..( brick building down the bottom of the garden)....we are on electric token meter which is more expensive i know.. but there's no big bill... but we are going though about £25. a week... that's with using the emersion heater.. for the hot water.. as we have coal fire with central heating.. and the fire is out during the summer...Work to live= not live to work0 -

Somebody kindly provided the following link on a previous post, I'm not sure whether the figures are correct but you could work out how much your candles/matches cost and compare.
http://www.ukpower.co.uk/running-costs-elec.asp0 -
If ive done that right it says it costs 26p to run a 40W light bulb for a month
seeing as my bf is a candle maker and it only costs 10p for a box of matches i think i might start using them instead as i seem to have a free supply and it only costs him £15.00 for wax and he gets about £300+ sxmall candles form that which he scents i might be able to save a few quid this winterTime to find me again0 -
The pedant in me says let's just get this right:
There is not a single user in these fora of electric.
Nobody at all here uses electric.
Nobody at all anywhere uses electric.
You can try - but using electric is a complete non-starter.
It's impossible for anybody to use electric - except as an adjective.
Please, can't we all go back to using electricity...?0 -
bud-miser.. what are you trying to get atWork to live= not live to work0
