  • Is insulating wallpaper readily available, and do you have any idea of costs? My utility room sucks the heat from the rest of the house and that sounds like the ideal solution.

I got mine from the local DIY shop and it cost about the same as woodchip as I recall - not expensive. You just paste it up like normal wallpaper and then paper over it. However...it might be worth searching on the internet a bit about this. I am no expert but I think it may not be good to paper an entire room with the stuff, as walls need to 'breath' - I only have mine on one wall.

Coincidentally I was reading an article about energy saving in a building magazine. They said the best ways to save energy were from:

    1. Cavity wall insulation
    2. Double glazing
    3. Loft and underfloor insulation
    4. Changing boiler or turning it down and lagging

Dont suggest a slow cooker though, ive had several and during colder days its too cold in my kitchen for the slow cooker to cook (unless you cover it with loads of towels for insulation which defeats the object really as the towels need washing cause they smell of the food i've cooked).

Can you place your slow cooker in another room perhaps? Or the hall? Under the table/on the table in the living room (depending on animals, children or other small animate things!). That way you benefit from the advantages of the slow cooker without the extra washing.

nicki's post above reminded me of another tip. I know we will all be trying to use the shower rather than the bath, but I'm sure the old soak will get a use or two.

If you can face the spiders under the bath a tip is to fill the area under the bath with the loose fill loft insulation (like little balls rather than the rolls) you can get. It'll stop any draught coming in via the soil pipe etc but it will also mean that bath water stays warm for longer if you choose to have a bath.

Wear a hat in the house you loose 75% of your body heat from the top of your head!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have just finished sewing the thermal lingings into the curtains for my sewing room, it faces north and does not have a double glazed window, so even with the rad on its b****y cold.

Use old tights to stuff a draught excluder roll.........or even old plastic carriers. I wear thermal boot socks over a pair of thin cotton socks to keep my feet warm. Wear a vest, you can get some really nice ones quite cheaply now, I know I swore I would never wear a vest after the wolly ones my grandmother used to knit for me and I had to wear a liberty bodice as well!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When you go out wear two pairs of gloves, ones with fingers in then covered with a pair of mittens.......Years ago I made fingerless gloves with a little cap that flapped over your fingers when you did not need to use your fingers.... originally made them for my SIL to wear when he went fishing ended up kntting them for all sorts of different people..............We wear fleecy lined jog suits with a tee shirt under in the house.....does not look elegant but you are warm.....I add a body warmer, I feel the cold more than OH.
