Lol, don't bank on it. My cats totally refuse to be money saving and are picky individuals. I have successfully pared the human food budget right down, but there has been no reductions in the cat's food budget.

our cat is great. she will eat absolutely anything (preferably asda cheap tins of cat food, with a bit of smart price tuna now and again). she's even cheap to entertain. one locust keeps her busy for at least 8 hours, for the cheap price of 15p.

Not sure of the relevant comparisons for gas cooking, but if things are microwaveable then I am pretty certain it works out cheaper to do that. Our electricity is half the price per month of our gas, and yet we have far more electric appliances. Also if you microwave e.g. a bowl of soup rather than heating it in a pan, then you can do it in the dish you will eat it out of, thus saving washing up the pan.

we already microwave everything we can. but our electricity costs us £45 per month and our gas is only £15! Hmmm those damn lizards
  • Mirry , I shop in Fareham too!! The best place for energy saving bulbs is John Lewis (Southsea or West Quay) - they are always 49p. Sometimes Asda have them at this price too:j

Prehaps not a good thing to do but I recently had to drain my entire central heating system of water (huge leak) but have found that dh has been putting on more clothes with the cold cause he cant turn on the heating till the rad is fixed and the system full again. I am sneakily thinking I may leave it empty:confused: cant use what you aint got after all.

    My tips will be:

to wear layers when its cold
    wear a hat
do the house work more quickly to get you warm or run up and down the stairs a few times!
dont put heating on during the day when we are at work.
Give our energy supplier regular readings so they dont estimate them

I've got a query about radiators. Why do they put them under windows? Then when I close my curtains the heat just goes straight through the glass?
If I leave curtains open I'm still losing heat since, I think, heat goes to the coldest part. Is this correct.

So basically I come to the decision most of the time that I should just leave the heating off. I'm toying with the idea of getting the radiators moved - but of course that's an up front expense, maybe next year when I've saved up for it.

If it's really cold in the evening I put a fire on in the living room - don't need the rest of the house to be warm. Kids are tucked up in bed.

My MIL wanders round in next to nothing and heating on summer and winter. Tumble dryer going every day and doesn't understand when I try to explain about the environment. Trying to get through to her via the future for her beloved grandkids.

sorry for the ramble but this is my bugbear area.

if you r radiator is underneath a window, and when your curtains are drawn, simply pust the curtains so they fold and lie on top of the window sil to stop the heat escaping to the window. you could always attach a bit of velcro if you dont have a window sil to bring the curtain up so they dont cover the window

can anyone remember about that cling film stuff you put on single glased windows andthen blow it with a hardryer? is it any good, is it cheap and where can you get it from?
Homebase do the film stuff, got some for the broken glass pane on secondary glazing (that works well too-ish).
