  • We have a ceramic floor in our kitchen and the cat sleeps there in his igloo bed. To help keep him warm we put a large sheet of thick polytstyrene (from some packaging ) under his bed. likewise when we go camping we put sheets of wall insulation under the airbed!!

When our Labrador was younger she slept in an unheated conservatory. As she slept there all year round, she acclimatised through the seasons and just grew an extra thick coat in the winter. The amount of hair she shed in Spring was incredible though. Now she's older and slightly arthritic her basket is in the kitchen next to the radiator. Strangely, she often finds that too warm and chooses to sleep in the middle of the kitchen floor.

I always charge my phone and mini disc player at work - saves a fortune that way

Only have lights on if absolutely neccesary. When watching TV I tend to have them off.

Curl up with a blanket and warm clothes

Only boil the amount of water needed at that time

Hug the dog as much as possible!!!

Keep doors shut to keep the heat in the room and not floating out into the rest of the house

Train mother to keep the window shut when the heating's on:mad:

  • My gas and electric each month ATM is £149 as gas was miscalculated last year and am paying an extra £40pm till the end of the year then I can swap to a cheaper supplier. We are high users as we are in 24/7 and with my illnesses I feel the cold very badly.

    Use all energy saving bulbs
    Use a SC
Often fill a flask with coffee and have that through the day

you did see you can get a grant penny pincher if on benefits, was on another thread, for gas or elect not sure
  • Cannot remember where I saw this tip....I haven't tried this myself so cannot vouch if will work or cause any problems. Also not sure whether it would only work for certain kettles.

It maybe best to see if anyone has tried it before attempting it yourself.

Instead of boiling an egg in pan for breakfast, put egg in kettle and when you put kettle on for morning tea/coffee etc, egg will boil at same time.

This is a bit unsocial, but consider getting separate single duvets for the winter - often, I've just got nice and snuggly in bed, then OH turns over and lets in a freezing cold shot of air!

Single duvets are the way to go. Think I posted about this AGES ago. It means just that, both warm and toasty, no air gaps, no unsocial hogging the duvet and still the means to come together when advisable!!

Can't think why anyone has just one duvet!:confused:

Errrrrr would not want to try that with the free range local eggs that I bought this week....... just on account of the strange dark smears on the shells!!!;) I have heard of this before but never done it and I dont think I will !

I have to say I agree with the single quilt approach - we opted for this about 18 months ago and are now lovely and snug in our individual quilts. It's quite romantic when OH sneaks across to have a cuddle ;)

Very good point. My other thought (probably why I've never tried it) is what would happen if the egg split for some reason. I wouldn't like to clean the kettle out.
