Everybody with a coal fire should have it opened up again, coal fires stay on in powercuts, pay as you go with no bills, hot water all the time (we have 2 baths a day in this house) and you dont get damp or sondensation with coal. And then watch british gas shareholders start whining at their chairman to do something because their profits are nose-diving!!

mardatha - i would love to have a coal fire back but jsut simply not possible in a ground floor flat, and am already convinced the reason my upstairs neighbours gas bill is so low is because hes nicking all my heat. and to be honest i would stick foil covered panels to the ceiling of my flat if i didnt think i would end up self concious and worrying what my guests thought ! has made me more determined not to put my heating on though and plus as his heating is in the floor of his flat (so my ceiling) Im hopign it would reverse somehow. Plus just had cavity wall insulation done so will hope that makes a difference

Sammy Kaye, that was a great bargain, made even better by being unexpected!

With regards to coal fires, I've noticed that hardly any newbuild houses have chimneys now. My friends have recently moved into a (rented) newbuild and the only houses on the estate with chimneys are the big expensive "executive" ones.
Surely in this day and age, chimneys should be mandatory.

Madartha, we've got a solid fuel heating system, and I can tell you, if you're having to buy the coal as we did last year it's not cheap! £28 per week. Also if your fire is your heating system, when there's a power cut, yes the heat comes out of the fire, but the electric pump doesn't work to circulate all your hot water... You have to keep running hot water away down the drain to save it boiling up in the loft and risking a flooded bedroom (this happened to us:eek:)

Gingervamp, maybe the only reason they include chimneys in the executive houses is 'cos they'll be the only folk who can afford the coal.

    Mortgage-free Glee!
I'm thinking in the winter I might move almost entirely into my bedroom. Then I'll only need to heat it and the kitchen, and have the hall radiator on low to keep the chill off the rest. Seems ridiculous but if gas increases like they say it's going to no point in heating anything that doesn't need to be heated.

Dread to think about the coming winter. Our gas & electric has gone from £50pm to £90pm eeeek!! Like most folks we bought some blankets from Aldi a year or two ago and in the evenings turn the heating off early & cuddle up in them - but this is the twentyfirst century. Martdatha I am getting so pinko too!!Loved Sami in the jacket, I'm with you hon and gosh I never knew what the Fn key was either!! Mxx

i wish it was possible for us to move into the bedroom but my 3 year old insist on living in the living room so we need to keep this heated which is harder than it sounds as we have a giant window that is nearly 3 meters  wide and just over 2 high!! no easy feet especially when its single glazed! so am lining these curtains this year and extending them - we are hoping to get proper vertical blinds fitted though so fingers crossed but am still hoping to keep the curtains there - if not i will be moving these and extending them to put over doors etc.

Our hallway is not heated (our doggy lives in here in the nights) but he gets a duvet to snuggle into and has a jumper on, not to mention a yummy rice/meat dinner most nights so hes well fed. The bathroom however has the radiator left on as it is the smallest room and we leave airers in there to dry overnight so the heat from that seaps into the hallway.

Our sons room gets the sun allday so is forever warm, his curtains get drawn at dusk, are long enough and wide enough for his window so hes nice and warm. He goes to bed with PJs on and with a duvet, and fleece on top so he stays nice and warm, he also has 2 teddies in bed with him to help insulate him not to mention a warm porridge supper before bed.

Our room sucks @rse quite frankly. The radiator doesnt work (never has) theres a 3 seater sofa in the way. BF insists on sleeping in the fetal position so i get no quilt and then whinged at for going to bed in my nice snuggly pjs. Will be putting an extra duvet under the bottom sheet this year and a bed sheet on top of the cover regardless fo what bf says.

Kitchen is tiny so i leave the oven open after cooking and it goes out into the living room and the kitchen is heated nicely. Have plenty of candles so should feel snuggly and plenty of fleece blankets too to keep snuggled under.

So in total i dont heat the hallway, our sons room (unless he is ill), or our room or the kitchen and the heating only goes on briefly in the morning to keep the chill away before we've had our porride and this winter im hoping ti will be less becuase he'll be in school form 9 - 3.30 so will be snuggly warm running round in there so i can sit looking like mitchelin woman all i please in my own house with noone else to worry about and with no heating on.:T

I wish we could open up our open fire again but we live in a smoke free zone and the little Hitlers in our council area would come down on us like a plague of locusts!
