    the underlying issue is being stupid.

    Eat too much =fat = death.

    Simples!


    There is no point in fluffing about and blaming society and how the obese related to their mothers whilst gestating in the womb which had an adverse effect and made them compulsive blah blah blah someone elses blah blah councilling blah blah emotional blah blah comfort eating blah blah

    Its all rubbish. Just stop eating too much. SImples!

    Thor - did you not read the start of my post. Obesity is a VERY complex issue. It is not about self control - I assume since you are setting yourself up as a paragon of virtue, that you do not smoke or drink alcohol? Yeah right.

    I have pointed out to you that it is not about an extra slice of cake or fish and chips - that is a stereotype and we all know how dangerous they are. It can be something innocent - if you ate 1 apple a day more than you need in 10 years you would have gained nearly 4 stone!!! By the time you are 40 you are 8 stone overweight and you can't for the life of you see why. As you gain the weight your body can do less and contrary to belief you do not burn more, necessarily, as your muscle mass has not increased. You develop insulin resistance and fatty liver and the weight gain increases and gains momentum. (Obviously this is more complex than an apple as in fact it is unlikely that if you ate 50 calories more of fruit and veg you would lay it down, but it is to illustrate that it is not obvious and that you may well not be a glutton)

    There are a myriad of reasons to go into as to why people become obese mostly they are slow and insidious. I could write a 50 page report going into the genetics, psychological issues and many more. Then there is the hormonal changes and the inability of a fatty liver to burn fat, insulin resistance etc. etc. It is a very complex mechanism more so than alcholol or nicotine, IMO.

    So to all that think losing weight is easy then make your fortune and enter the multi million pound weight loss industry, it isn't that easy.

    Maybe if the health service invested the money in helping the overweight to lose weight with investigations, CBT, support then this problem could be solved.

    I have read this thread with interest and, whilst I too cannot imagine how anyone can get to this size, I can testify that losing weight is not as simple as some contributors to the thread would have us believe.

    I am in the position of trying to lose weight and, whilst I have come down from size 22 to size 16, for the past 5 months or so I have hit a plateau and cannot seem to lose any more. At 11 1/2 stone I am about 3 stones over weight.

    'Addicted to food' and 'not getting a hit from fruit and veg'. No, not true. I eat approx 1200 calories a day and it is ALL 'healthy food'. Granary bread, all kinds of fruit, salads, green veg. We sometimes have grilled pork cutlets and I fill half my plate up with steamed cabbage or broccoli. Followed by an orange.

    There's a long list of things I don't eat and it includes ALL junk foods, takeaways, ready-meals, sweets, cakes, puddings, pies and biscuits. Of late I have even 'gone off' potatoes in any shape or form.

    I can't walk very far, but I've recently joined a gym. There are people who go there in wheelchairs or with their oxygen cylinders and no one minds what you look like. I also go to adult swimming classes and to aqua-aerobics. Exercise is probably 4 or 5 times a week. I am aware that muscle mass decreases gradually from one's 30s and therefore it can be a losing battle although there is some research that suggests that muscle loss can be regained or at least, loss can be slowed.

    I started gaining weight when I hit my teens, and in those days, it was all home-cooked food and sweets still on ration. Exercise consisted of walking or cycling just to get somewhere! As a student nurse I wasn't very slim - 10 1/2 stones. I was at my slimmest when my children were little. Even something as ordinary as making a phone call involved putting them into the push-chair and walking to the village to the phone box.

    Every time I go to the GP, no matter what for, they always mention weight, but at no stage has any GP offered help. Either they assume I know all about it, or they take the simplistic view expressed in this thread: 'eat less, move more, simples'. It is NOT so simple.

    I had some chest pains(they werent sure if it was heart or not at the time)
    went to the Dr's and was told i need to cut down smoking,I have never smoked
    Told to cut down alchohol,I havent drank in about 3 years and was never really a heavy drinker before that
    so then he went onto losing weight which as i said was when i had my chest cartilige problems

    it just seems to be the check box thing. he even went on to say i had put on a lot of weight
    As i told him last weight check at the docs I was in my late teens
    so easily more than 16 years before and I carry a lot more muscle than I did a a teen!
    If im honest I came out of the Drs pretty annoyed as he knew I had been fairly immobile for months

    Hehehehe This made me think of 6 months ago I had a very mild heart attack, I don't smoke, I drink on average 4 units per month my weight is well inside the good as far as bmi and body fat ratio goes, no gentlemans beergut, low blood pressure, low cholestrol, I never eat processed foods only fresh and very little red meat with lots of fish and oilive oil etc and zero stress. It totally knacakered them as I did not tick any box, turned out it was due to a reaction to an antiinflam I was taking. But it was fun watching them scratch their heads.

    Margaret-Clare I empathise - it isn't as simple as calories in less than calories out - weight loss. Maybe 111/2 stone is just the weight your body wants to be. I would guess that your BMI is probably less than 30 depending on your height, probably more like 27 if you are 5 ft 4. Not too bad. what is your waist to hip ratio? Do you know your percentage of body fat as that maybe well be within normal range for someone of your age, which would be 24 - 36%, (WHO figures)

    Yes 40 stone is an extreme end of the scale, but weight gain is not as hard as it seems.

    When the government gives GP's an incentive to get their patients losing weight we might get the GP's to turn around and congratulate those that lose 10 kgs until then they won't bother to look up!

    Thank you, pollycat. Unfortunately my BMI is 33.7 and my body fat is 41.4% - I have a body composition monitor. For my height (just under 5 feet) I should be no more than 8 stone, or 8 1/2 at the outside, but I don't think I've ever been that since childhood, except for the time when my children were little.

    Margaret-Clare I think that you are a classic example as you said yourself of it not being simple! Apologies smallest height assumption was 5ft 2. There I go making assumptions and I am preaching against them!!!
