  • Oh dear!

    I had a black moldy smelly washing machine a few years ago. I wiped/ cleaned the rubbery bits with white vinegar then put half a bottle of vinegar through on a hot wash which de-odourised it.

    Another tip is to leave the washing machine door open when it is not in use.

    Hope you get it sorted.

    Try running the hottest wash you have with half a packet of Soda Crystals. Usually works.

    Thank you everyone for your tips. I have done another hot wash whilst empty but may try another with either soda crystals or vinega - will see what i have in cupboards. I dont thik i cook enough with onions for that to make a difference but i do use mainly non bio due to washing baby clothes. I may buy some regular powder for perhaps the others in the family.

    Thanks again :)

  • I agree with thte door left open, also removing the washing as soon as the machine has finished a wash, not leaving it for a while.
    Put the kettle on. ;)

    Does your washing machine have a filter? Not all do, but if there is one it needs taking out and cleaning regularly. All sorts of evil gunk builds up on it otherwise-take it from one who knows ;)
    import this
  • Just a couple of thoughts--

    Do you frequently cook with onions? Is the smell coming from you putting kitchen items in with other washing? If so, try only putting kitchen towels, aprons etc. in with hot washes.

    Could the smell be on your hands? I know that sounds really strange, but the smell can actually linger for a couple of days after chopping (and sometimes just eating!) onions. If you can smell it on your hands, try washing them with a stainless steel teaspoon--like just rubbing them around under the water.

    I know both of these things sound ridiculous:o, but I noticed when I last went to the gym that when I opened my locker my clothes smelled like onions:eek: after I'd been away from them for awhile. I think it is just because I cook with them frequently so I've been trying the above....

    If it isn't that, then sorry to make such weird suggestions, and maybe try running vinegar in your empty machine on the hottest setting, it can help remove mildew or odours that have built up.

    I read that as ' do you wash with onions' haha, could just imagine popping in a couple of silverskin onions rather than washing tabs... :rotfl::rotfl:

    Sorry - I know the answer to this is on here elsewhere because I found it yesterday but it's not working for me...

    I followed everyone's instructions and removed and cleaned the filter:eek:) removed, bleached and cleaned the little tray where you put powder and conditioner (although I dont use this, I use liquid in the ball that you put in the drum with the clothes) and have now run 3 separate 95 degree washes with lots of soda crystals in the pre-wash and normal wash tray and my washing machine still smells like its full of a football teams sweaty socks. Theres only me and my flatmate here so nothing really smelly ever goes in there. What am I doing wrong?:o
