When I bought an engagement ring I knew roughly what she liked, a four claw setting in yellow gold as opposed to platinum which was traditional in her country. I spent time visiting jewellers and settled on Boodle and Dunthorne http://www.boodles.com/ They do massively priced jewellery but did then make some class but fair priced rings.

I knew she wanted to select it or more accurately to approve it, my having made the selection so to speak. So I arranged to have the jeweller bring out the one I selected minus the price of course. A few others were also ready should we need them.

She was overjoyed, I had made my decision based on the 4 Cs and within a price bank I was happy with. The jeweller did a marvellous job and resized it over the following week. It was certainly worth the theatre of being entertained in their shop.

And the price ? not expensive at all. In today's market obviously higher but a few thousand perhaps.

Just a thought - my daughter's fiance proposed with a simple solitaire diamond necklace and then they went to the jewellers to choose a ring together.

You cannot live as I have lived an not end up like me.

Oi you lot - please :heart:GIVE BLOOD  - you never know when you and yours might need it back! 67 pints so far.

I wouln't have wanted to pick my own engagement ring. I wanted the proposal to be a surprise and for me to be able to walk around from that moment onwards wearing a ring.
Imp chose it all by himself, and for me that makes it much nicer and worth far more than any other ring I've ever seen. But them I'm just a hopeless romantic.

OP, you know your OH better than any of us. Would she want you to take the initiative with the ring or for her to have a say? You could always check with the shop that you could exchange it if it wasn't right. I'm sure they'd be fine with it.

Thank you all so very much for the invaluble advice you have given me over the past 24 hours. Well today is the 18th May, and as I have seen on the internet it will take 3 weeks to order it so I went into town this morning and ordered it!!!!

FANTASTIC i thought, it will be here in time for our romantic weekend away on the 11th June.

Wrong it takes a month to order it!!! (B*ll*X)

But luckily they did have one in stock, so i am now the proud owner of the above said engagement ring!!!! Yipeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Only one problem, i have now had to hide this very expensive, surprise, once in a lifetime gift under the Bed until I can find a more secure place for it!!!

Why does nothing ever go to plan???

Thanks again all. Wish me luck for the afternoon of the 12th June

    Mark

Couple of people saying about discolouring occuring to their rings.

I was under the impressioN (having recently bought an engagement ring) the white gold would tarnish slightly yellow while platinum would tanrish slightly grey... no big deal, you can just have it repolished (something like £18 - although prices did vary) and it's sparkle like new.

Apparently after say a year's wear, brides like to have a nice polish shortly before the big day!

Personally I would go for the little girl's dressing up ring (the sort you get in princess' sets) - and I guarantee that that ring will be kept for ever and a day as well!
:A My husband proposed to me with a pink plastic ring out of a cracker on Christmas morning. You're right about it being kept for ever. I love it! We never did get a traditional one. He gave me a wedding ring that morning too, saying he didn't want an engagement, he wanted a marriage.

    That's a beautiful ring you've picked, devonmark. I'm sure she'll love it.
May all your dots fall silently to the ground.
