I mean, should I stop applying for admin work (VERY difficult to come by if you are not a blonde dolly bird with nice legs!) and widen my goals to, say, hotel work.? Well, do you know something - I HAVE applied for hotel work, namely reception, and even that is very hard to get.
Given all that depressing failure, is there ANYWHERE left for me to try now?
After many months of searching exclusively for receptionist/admin assistant/customer service jobs and having received zero or negative response from those fields, i'm starting to think that some of the jobs on those jobsites may be fictitious, and the few that actually exist are being jumped on by the thousands!
For those debating on the care jobs (just giving my personal opinion so please dont shoot the messenger) after months of unemployment and having applied for thousands of office type jobs, having gotten zero responses and being called for only 3 or so interviews in total, all of which i didn't get...i finally decided to apply for my first ever care job (yes just did one care job application), they replied a few days later, interviewed me and have just told me i passed the interview :j
The more i think about starting care work the happier i am because i'll be DIRECTLY helping people rather than doing a job like call centre work that i did in the past where i loathed every minute of it. Please, don't get me wrong, i'm not looking down on call centre work, it just wasn't for me.0 -
From my experience there do seem to be more jobs around at the moment, but they're getting a huge number of applicants - I'm looking at admin/customer services/hospitality work as permanent positions but am willing to look at longer term temp work in pretty much any field (I just want a job so I can move nearer my partner).
I've found that getting to know a couple of consultants at the main agencies is getting me more responses from them in general - I tend to call them a couple of times a week and ask nicely if there is anything fresh coming in and if there is anything I could do to tailor my CV and cover letters further to suit what the client criteria are. I've been lucky really in that I'm interviewing next week for a role which had I seen it on a job board I would have bypassed as the salary is far higher than any I've earned thus far and more than I'm typically looking at but the consultant who is dealing with it sent me the details to gauge my interest as he thought it might interest me before it went on job board - it was posted today which is when I found out the salary - he only assured me it would meet my expections when we discussed it.
I guess what I'm saying is that it's not just about your cv and the jobs out there but making contacts within the agencies to make your name the one they remember to look up when checking CV data against new client requirements, but without being the pushy annoying candidate they call last as they know you'll be hassling them!It’s not worth doing something unless someone, somewhere, would much rather you weren’t doing it.

I watched a program last year, where two equally qualified accountants sent out CV's to some 30 employment agencies, one was male in his mid 50's and had tons of experience, the other was 20 female and had no experience whatsoever....
ALL the agencies contacted the young woman, NONE of them contacted the man.
Agencies are only interested in what they stereotypically think employers go for.... Young attractive women.... And most jobs now are advertised through agencies.
On this one point, the agencies are correct in assuming that being young and female is what employers want for non-physical (admin) jobs.
You shouldn't have your age specified on your CV?? But I do agree the organisations I have worked in with various consltants are middle aged men that each have a PA slim attractive young woman (who are paid well above average), fair enough they may not be intelligent - but they are nice to look at and gives them someone to flirt with at christmas parties helping them think they are 21 again - it gives them that feel good factor - its all a bit sad really..:-) It's nothing new its being going on for centries!!!"£$%^&*()0
