Reminds me of another post I saw where a poster claimed, whilst stranded in Barcelona, they they ran up a large bill in mobile roaming charges as it was the only option to contact people back home.

No public phone boxes in Barcelona these days?

Expenses have to be reasonable. Some people seem to think its an excuse to have a jolly all payed for by the airline. They may have a shock when they reclaim.

If they allowed alcohol claims, then next time it happens everybody would be drinking bolly or champagne. I think as said before, that soft drinks and tea/coffee etc are acceptable, but not booze.

Why can't people go a few hours with alcohol?

what are you talking about? We're talking about people who were stranded for days up to a couple of weeks! what soft drinks are we allowed? Pop - or maybe we could buy a big bottle of cheap squash and dilute it at the public toilets.

I was stranded for a week but didn't have alcohol. Nobody paid for my meals etc either, I paid for my own.

No, people can have whatever drink they fancy but to expect to be able to claim for alcohol is taking the p1$$.

That woudl be me and the bill for roaming charges was for re-booking my cancelled flight through the easyjet website at 7.00 in the morning (as soon as I found out about cancellation) and before you say it, yes I know there are internet cafes in Barcelona but felt it was quite important to rebook as soon as I could before the next available flight was full!!! As it happens it wasn't as dear as I had dreaded (had never gone online abroad before and had imagined humungous charges) so did not include this in my claim - but if I had I think it would have been justified!!

So you feel that the airline would be required to pay if your mobile phone company charged you a lot for data roaming charges, but being that they didn't you're letting the airline off?

Agree alcohol shouldn't be covered, though accept it is often not any more expensive than soft drinks.

Errm no, I don't think it's a case of 'letting anyone off' after all it wasn't the airlines fault! What I'm saying is that if I had incurred excessive additional expense which I couldn't afford to cover I would have included this in my claim to see whether it was possible to get any of this back - what is the problem with that? It was a case of necessity and not luxury (like claiming for alcohol!)
