Liked the link to Tesco veggie oil, wonder if either my '97 Astra 1.7TD, or my '97 2,5L Ford-engined non-turbo LDV convoy would run on it.

Drifting completely off thread - can anyone explain why the price of Red Bull has shot through the roof?

Probably because their competitors (Relentless) have pretty much tripled the price of their drinks coupled with a marketing strategy that is taking them into the realms of proper luxury branding (see F1 and the Flug tug) and the rising cost of aluminium (wheras companies like coke split this across their product range, the red bull co don't sell much in plastic bottles or cartons)

a quick search leads to an alylysis of their marketing strategy for Germany, which highlights the fact they should keep the price high and steer the product towards destinations like ski resorts and high class bars above supermarkets.

Supermarket petrol prices are generally competitive to attract motorists to fill their tanks and get their shopping in the same trip. That does not seem to be the case with Tesco.

Certainly where I live, our local Tesco is always more expensive than the nearby Shell garage just down the road. The fuel at Shell will likely be of a better quality to boot.

I think a lot of times it is the other way round with Tesco. They already have a lot of people buying their weekly shop so they are likely to fill up whilst there without looking at the price. For other chains they may need to use the cheap petrol to pull the customers in but probably not for Tesco.

£1.20 a litre translated, it means around £6.00 a gallon
When I first started driving it was 4s.9d a gallon and we used to moan about that as well.:):)

I used to work for a petrol station belonging to one of the big supermarkets and every week we'd get price updates for fuel. However, what the company used to do is issue a single bulletin for all petrol stations, so we could see the price the other stores in the company were selling their petrol for. Of course ours in Aberystwyth was always the highest on the list - rural area, very little competition (just 2 other petrol stations within a 5 mile radius), but the big city stores were up to 5p lower. So theres some truth that pricing is done according to local competition.

You do realise that all the supermarkets get their fuel from ESSO?
A large number of Tesco stores get their fuel from Greenergy. This is the supplier whose fuel caused the problems a few years ago. I've seen a Shell tanker in my local Asda.

    Tesco Yate, Bristol.
5p off vouchers are regularly given. Problem is: They have no petrol station.
It would probably cost you more than the 5p per ltr saving, driving to the nearest Tesco Petrol station which is several miles away.

the last supermarket(sainsburys) i worked in gave out petrol vouchers even thoguht the store had no petrol station,
