    @Glen,
    So if the seller isnt registered anymore, you don't get a refund? Are you kiding me? I thought we were always 100% protected with paypal. If that happens can you do a charge back or something?
    Jesus, now im scared!
    Try not to take such advice at face value, regardless of any losses incurred by Paypal, you are still covered and WILL get refunded, Paypal will simply chase the seller up for the monies regardless of them having an existing paypal account.

    Paypal's own T&C state that your entitlement is a full refund by them, should your item not turn up, feel free to check up on this. Having had second hand experience of this myself, I can safely say you are 100% protected with Paypal.

  • I understand that Paypal will refund the monies paid by the buyer - what annoyed me was that I alerted ebay to the scam and they didn't pull the listing. 20 people have now parted with £357 each and are eagerly anticipating the arrival of their iphone - which they won't get. The 'seller/scammer' has given a delivery date of 30 days after funds have cleared, they then send an email when the 30 days have passed to say there is a slight delay of a few weeks and to bear with them as it will be worth it in the end. Funds are subject to a 'holding period' now by paypal, which can take a week or so. The buyer then finds that the 45 day period to open to dispute with Paypal to reclaim their money has passed and there's nothing they can do. As usernames are not now displayed, there is no way of alerting the innocent buyers. Ebay have acknowledged (loosley) that I was scammed by this seller for the same item but that it takes a while to investigate and they can't tell me the outcome anyway due to confidentiality reasons.

    It's a good way to get a short term 6k loan! Maybe that is what he is doing..

    Inspired! Never thought of that. Then again, in his case its not a loan, more of a 'help yourself to other peoples' hard-earned cash' type of affair.

    I doubt it, most common method with this scam is buy an off the shelf ltd company complete with bank account around £150 or offshore £800 (but safer), put one or several different highly desirable items on ebay with a very realistic BIN price, state item will be sent within a certain time after funds clear, await 20 days for enough buyers to cough up via paypal, empty account, disappear. Not sure about UK but our financial services commission close down about 200 a week of these companies.

    200 a week, that is bad. Maybe ebay should think about getting rid of these scams somehow.

    Sorry should have made it clearer, 200 companies found to be set up for fraud not just ebay. Seems though from looking that the UK is now much better for them as the govt cannot afford to do constant checks on companies started within the last 3 months. Usual indicator for FSC to suspend an account is multiple low deposits (under £500) from sources such as paypal, visa etc and no outgoings within the same period. Banks here are obliged by law to report these immediately whereas I believe uk banks have up to 30 days to do so.)

    I imagine so here in the UK, just like if you claim a cashback from your bank on an unauthorized transaction, you can bet on your Nelly, the bank will be sure to get the money back from the perpetrator.

    Paypal will try up to the point that they sell the debt on to another (more forceful) company. ;)
