There is a risk to open sourcing phones, not in aspects of security but uniformity.

Apple is seen as easy to use because everything works in a similar manner as apple vet all the applications on the store. This is why apple is easier to use.

Sure android can catch up in applications, but it works in a different manner, it will never have the same uniformity because it is not controlled like the IPhone. The UI will be what ever the developer feels is best, and from experience a single developer is a terrible UI designer, hence my FYP undergoing last minute UI changes.

There are two ways of constructing a software design: One way is to make it so simple that there are obviously no deficiencies, and the other way is to make it so complicated that there are no obvious deficiencies

Well My favourite programs? Installous....cough cough cough :D and MyWi which turns my iphone into a 3G wifi router WITHOUT Vodafone finding out i'm tethering! :p

    Actually they can tell.

The packets sent will contain information about the PC they initiate from as well as details of the browser. If VF (or any of the mobile operators for that matter) wanted to they could simply look at the packets. It would be a dead give away if the packet headers said it was from IE8 on Windows XP/Vista / W7 if it's supposed to be an iPhone thats originating them.

Oh and that tethering is build into Windows Mobile 6.5 anyway npo need for an add on..

If you want to customize it (ie jailbreak it) then you don't need a Computer Science degree like you do with Android, you just run a simple .exe file to install Cydia and bob's yer uncle!

Oh wow, you've managed to change the background image! And, is that round app icons I see?! What on earth have I been doing with Windows Mobile all these years when I can get an iPhone and do all that customization! (btw Windows Phones can have different background images out of the box, and there are (& have been for some time) many easy to use Applications enabling users to use their phone as a 'WiFi Router', e.g. this one

Most people don't need to do any complicated modding to Android to gain great flexibility and an enhanced user interface; it can be had right out of the box.

I don't have a Computer Science degree (yet!), but I am perfectly capable of modding and enhancing my phone without installing some dodgy (and potentially illegal) 3rd party software & related apps.

Wow! i'm really impressed that you know so much about Windows Mobile so please give yourself a pat on your back, you definitely deserve it:T

FYI I was replying to "karatedragon" quote "The iPhone is for faggots who want a restricted, locked down phone and want to surf the web and send some emails and downloads a few apps.Android is for people who like customisation and don't follow the crowd." I was showing him how easy it is to customize the iphone so apologies if i offended you in any way.

I understand what you're saying but the fact is that i have been tethering via wifi to my laptop for the last 7-8 months without any additional charges and i usually download about 2-4GB per month (i'm on vodafone business sim only which allows up to 5GB per month). I'm pretty sure if i tried to tether without using MyWi, Vodafone would know straightaway and i'd be hit with huge bills. So i suspect the software is fooling Vodafone into thinking i'm still using my iphone for internet access and also no reviewers of this software have mentioned ever being hit by tethering charges by their network operators worldwide. Easily the best $10 i have ever spent!

    :

    1) The iphone OS interface is a lot simpler to use. Even until today i (or my wife) have never had to refer to the iphone user guide , whereas the we have to continuosly refer to the N1 user guide. IMHO this is probably the biggest selling point of the iphone...its SIMPLICITY.

Out of curiosity what are you constantly having to refer to? I didn't actually realise my HTC had a full manual until I just searched google

Yes it's easy to customize your iPhone and in the process void the warranty. Also there is currently a case going on in the US regarding Copyright as Apple consider that jailbreaking violates their copyright.

The difference with Android is you don't need to void your warranty to customise your phone.

Try a HTC phone running Sense and you'll find a superb UI.
