Once youve followed the instructions you REALLY need to upgrade your ram (Assuming you do have 0.5 gig)

Thanks Rik, it's all done and rebooted now, and definitely a lot quicker than it was, I will be visiting some of the local computing stores this week, and Maplin, to look for it, if not I'll buy it online. I'm hoping that as they don't really use it for much this will do them for a year or two longer, and as they got it for free (gran bought herself a top of the range Macbook) I don't mind spending the money, for all it is. You've been very helpful, thank you.

have you considered if you are only going to be using it for internet and Skype one of the Ubuntu derivatives? as some are specifically designed to run very fast on low spec systems

xubuntu, kubuntu or even normal Ubuntu
    Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

yes and they are all free because they are open source

they include 99% of the things most people need for free as well (such as a full office program) the only thing most people seem to need over and above what comes on the disk is the 'restriced extras' package which just contains the 'none open source' codecs for things such as dvd play back - however this package is also free

you also do not need a anti-virus program because you do not get virus's on the OS

anyways if you are interested in any of this you can download and burn of the operating system and try it as they all come with a thing called LiveCD which runs the operating system from the CD and your RAM, ok this is not massively quick due to the limitations of how it runs, however it gives you the ability to check that all your hardware works and allows you to have a play with it withou making any lasting changes to your hard drive

    quick edit
Ubuntu requires the highest spec system to run (although still not high)
    Recommended Minimum
    System Requirements (Desktop)Processor (x86)1 GHzMemory512 MBHard Drive 5 GBMonitor Resolution 1024×768

    KUbuntu requires lower spec
    Desktop Processor700 MHz (x86) Memory 384 MB[31]Hard drive 4 GB Video card 1024x768

    XUbuntu requires very little
Xubuntu can be installed with one of 2 CDs, both of which require at least 1.5 GB of hard drive space. Installing with the Desktop CD requires 192 MB of RAM, while the Alternate CD, which uses a text-based installer, requires 64 MB of RAM, and also allows access to additional options for the installation.[17][18]
Once installed, Xubuntu can run with 192 MB RAM, but 256 MB RAM is strongly recommended

IF you decide to try a linux system, it is probably trying a live cd as Gonzo suggests, especially if the boys are using wireless, getting wireless to work can be tricky but as its a 3 yr old lappy it should not be a problem. There are lots of folks who can help if needed. Plus if you do try it and the boys like it it is relatively to set it up as a Dual Boot system so they can use both Linux and Vista whenever they feel like it. It also might get them interested into the working of computers , and eventually and get as sad as some of us guys/gals.:D
