Help with this crummy machine please!

Options
My boys have inherited an ESystems EI3102 laptop, which is about 3 years old. It runs vista, and is as slow as treacle. I have tried a system restore but the earliest restore point is six months ago, I can't figure out how to restore it to the factory settings - they don't need any of the files on it, and don't really need it for anything other than internet browsing or Skype. I was thinking of buying a bigger memory for it, but think if I try this first, it might do the job. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Jackie X

You can scan it for nasty's and such but if it is ther same spec as when new, it only had 512Mb Ram with a good lump of that taken for the onboard graphics.

The most effective upgrade would be to dump the 512Mb stick of ram and fit 2x 1Gb togive you 2Gb of Ram

That's what I thought, thank you. Can you give me lead on where to get the new 2 x 1Gb (I presume this will work as 2 seperate cards)?

http://www.crucial.com/uk/?click=true has a utility that will scan your system and tell you what RAM is in your machine and how many slots are spare. It will then give you some upgrade options - you can either buy it from there, or have a look on eBuyer.com or eBay.

RAM would definitely make a difference. but also run these ~
Download MALWAREBYTES (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
Open malwarebytes and goto UPDATE and click 'check for updates'. After its updated goto SCANNER and click PERFORM FULL SCAN then click SCAN
Remove everything thats found (needs to be ticked)
Post the COMPLETE log here AFTER youve deleted everything it finds

    reboot

Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD THIS VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/2894/
Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)

Before you rush out to buy RAM....don't.... unless you feel confident about removing the keyboard.

If not, you should only buy a single 1GB RAM module. So you will have between 1.25 and 1.5GB installed, dependent on your current configuration. As it's only Vista Home Basic, it might be ok.

    £21.02

    £22

For a slow computer I'd download the program which fixes memory leaks - has sped up two laptops massively running XP!

    https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2436849
    is the guide

    Cleanup memory leaks - http://www.pcwintech.com/cleanmem
is the programme I was talking about

Thanks for the replies gents, I've done the malware scan which took 2 hrs 49mins, it only found one item! I'll copy the log here and you can see what you think:

    Scan type: Full scan (C:\|E:\|)
    Objects scanned: 212642
    Time elapsed: 2 hour(s), 47 minute(s), 17 second(s)
    Memory Processes Infected: 0
    Memory Modules Infected: 0
    Registry Keys Infected: 1
    Registry Values Infected: 0
    Registry Data Items Infected: 0
    Folders Infected: 0
    Files Infected: 0
    Memory Processes Infected:
    (No malicious items detected)
    Memory Modules Infected:

    Registry Keys Infected:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ext\Stats\{1d4db7d2-6ec9-47a3-bd87-1e41684e07bb} (Adware.MyWebSearch) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
    Registry Values Infected:
    (No malicious items detected)
    Registry Data Items Infected:
    (No malicious items detected)
    Folders Infected:

    Files Infected:

I will do the second check now, and then see how it goes. The links about removing the keyboard were really useful, it appears the empty memory slot is under the keyboard, and the occupied on is the one I can access easily. I am willing to give it a try, I did work in an electronics factory for a while, my fine motor skill are quite accurate , so I fancy giving it a go. I'll buy the 1 Gb first, which was my original thought, and see how much that boosts it. I'll keep you informed how it goes in case this is useful to anyone else.

Dumping Vista could lead to problems with Drivers.

Youve done what many people do on here (Though I dont know why), please post the DATABASE VERSION you ran
