The old laptop should also work as is too, assuming it has wireless already. The N wireless gives faster Wireless speeds but you are on 10Mbps internet so no real need to change the old laptop assuming it is Wireless G (54mbps) The Vaio if it is draft N will work at up to 54mbps with existing router and up to 200Mbps with the Virgin N routers but you won't notice much difference except a longer range perhaps, and that will mean that the speed will drop the further away from the router you are.

Found out that the cable wireless routers with virgin media are only for adsl and mine is through cable so it will have to be a separate router anyway.

Got in with the admin way but there is just about no info there I have always had this problem its blanked out everything, I posted about it some time ago. I will have to get the router disc out to find out anything. Is it worth re doing the router from scratch?
    Thanx

It is probably blanked out on the Setup - Basic Settings tab , beside that where it says Setup It should say Wireless click that and it should show you the Basic Wireless Settings, which is what I was talking about with the earlier post. Make sure that the mode is G or Mixed, and SSID Broadcast is enabled.

    It says

    Mixed
    Wireless Channel 6-2437ghz
    ssid enabled

Is ssid the name I would see in the list of available connections? Its just I put the disc in and not sure if I have got the name set in the right box
    Thanx

The Adsl one should still work with your existing Cable Modem have you got a link where we can have a look at it ?

Yes it probably says WRT54G or some such. But whatever it is set to you should see that in you list of available networks.

I might be getting somewhere but its not right yet, I can now see the network in the list of connections but it has a red crass at the side of it. If I right click connect is blanked out but I accessed properties and input the password but it is not connecting. I have probably gone some of the settings wrong somehow as I did put the disc in to set it up again and couldnt remember what was in before so just guessed. It does say signal strength excellent but the red cross is still there.

I do have a 64 bit phassphase if that makes any difference and before it used to say wpa2 at the side in the network list but when I hover overe it now it says wpa psk 802 11g

Back to Wireless / Click on Wireless Security and it should tell you what the Passphrase is (you can change it of course) and also Says Security Mode i would guess yours is WEP (not the best) you should use WPA2-Personal it is more secure.
