police broke door down and won't pay for it

just to update all who replied on this thread - my mum met with the chief police officer twice who was most interested in what happened and wanted all the details. the second time he met with her he brought the policeman who was in charge on the day of the incident. my mum calmly explained everything and her reasons for believing it was not fair that she should have to pay. the police chief told her he would have a think about it all. 1 week later she got a cheque for the entire amount of the door. so there you go - it pays to not lie down and roll over when you think there has been an injustice!DON'T WORRY BE HAPPY

Not lucky, the police were always going to pay because they acted unreasonably
As for pursuing the tenant, he'd handed the flat back in good order, got his deposit back and moved to a different country so I'm struggling to see any basis for him paying, same for his employer, neither were responsible for the damage.
The people who knocked the door in without reasonable justification were the police and they should pay. It's just a shame they took five months of wriggling and delay before they did so0
