Major pregnancy/mystery shopping/hair dye dilema!

Ok I need some advice!

To set the scene: My hair is a mess, I feel miserable and I'm skint (permanently). A mystery shopping company has just phoned to offer me a assignment with a major hairdressing chain. I need to get my hair coloured and a cut and blow dry. They will reimburse all costs and also pay me a fee for my time! My usual hair cut at the local salon costs £15 this salon I have been asked to go to costs £200!!!

The problem is, I'm 7 weeks pregnant! I've done a bit of searching on the internet and also asked the hairdresser. It looks as if most research shows there isnt really a risk to baby in getting hair dyed whilst pregnant, and the hairdresser sais that if I am just getting a few highlights then the dye isnt even touching my scalp so there's note even any chemicals going on my skin therefore all advice seems to suggest this is safe?

I really want to go, but I think if enough people said no to me, I wouldnt as I dont really want to put my baby at risk.

Opinions please?
Me debt free thanks to MSE :T

Have you spoken to your doctor? I can understand your concerns and your doctor would be the best person to ask.

    Hope you get to go!!
  • Hi there

I have no scientific proof, nor have I read anything about the subject. All that I can offer is that my hairdresser (who works for a well known chain) continued to use bleach on her hair throughout both of her pregnancies without problems.

Have you checked the net or with your docs/midwife for research into this subject? If you decide to do the mystery shopper thing, you could discuss it with the chosen hairdresser and as was said before, you could go for something that would not involve chemicals/dyes touching your scalp.

When I did hairdressing years ago, we were told that reason perms (it was a long time ago) and colours might not take as well when a women is pregnant is because of hormones, nothing harms the baby.

Hiya, I'm 30 weeks pregnant and had mine coloured at 27 weeks, my hairdresser told me, like one of the previous posts said, that it's to do with how the colour takes rather than any effect on baby.

Hope you get to go, I felt a million dollars after mine was done! :D

  • I was concerned about that but my hairdresser said semi-permanent was ok but no head massages and that was when I was 8 weeks.

Dyed my hair yesterday myself (Im 32 weeks now) as the hairdresser costs a fortune, but had to cover many greys!!!

I'm 24 weeks, and had highlights done at 7 weeks, no problems with colour or anything else. Enjoy!

Home coloured mine throughout my pregancy no problems, but then I didn't take a lot of notice of a lot of the more "minor" risk factors so I may not be the best judge:rolleyes: On the other hand, I would think that if it were a major issue the hairdressers wouldn't risk doing it as they may be liable if anything did happen (God forbid).
