And in the first post in the thread the OP says...For the last 4 years I've had my eyes tested by Specsavers (and bought 4 frames&lenses from them!) I wasn't happy with their latest test as it took less than 10 minutes so I made an appointment with a local independent opticians.Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. As has already been pointed out several times on this (old) thread, criticising "Specsavers" in totally meaningless as they are franchises !
If you wish to criticise Specsavers in Warmington on Sea - mention them by name - DON'T tar everyone with the same brush !0 -
Just a few questions....
You would have noticed a huge difference when they lowered your prescription that much straight away.
Why didnt you?
And why has it taken 4yrs for you to realise that you couldnt see through your glasses to bring it up now?
As you also stated that there is Glaucoma and Diabeties in the family why were you not having yearly tests done?
I'm not the OP but have been a specs wearer for over 50 years and the post I've quoted has annoyed me no end!
1. No set of lenses, even when they are the same prescription, have EVER given me identical eyesight to the set I wore before. When first wearing new specs your eyes take time to adjust, by this I mean hours, days or even weeks. By the time they have adjusted you accept your *new* vision as the norm. This is especially true with long-sightedness which is more difficult to guage than short-sightedness. So the huge difference might not have seemed huge by the time the necessary adjustments have kicked in.
2. Why can it take 4 years to realise you cannot see properly? Because you have NOTHING to compare your vision with. How is a spec wearer supposed to know that what they are seeing isn't what they are supposed to be seeing, given that no 2 sets of lenses give the same vision result? And there are many. like me, who have no memory of having had perfect vision to use as a comparison.
Spec wearers are completely dependent on their optician. The only times I have questioned my prescription have been on a couple of occasions when I realised that I was not seeing as clearly as a friend with good vision who was looking at the same object.
3. Repeat tests are advised by the optician on the basis of the information they have. I go for new sight tests when I get the card through my door saying they are due. I trust the expert - isn't that what I'm supposed to do with what is, after all, a medical issue?
These days I always try to get at least 3 sight tests done by different opticians before spending the few hundred pounds it usually costs me for new specs. And I don't expect them to show identical results anymore, because they don't. The differences might be minor, but differences there are. If one test is well off the mark I know not to go back to that optician again.
Please appreciate that people with vision impairment are totally dependent on their optician to SHOW them what their maximum potential vision is.
Jules22, I sincerely hope that you are not an optician. My first reply was witty and intellectual but I lost it so you got this one instead

I suspect they aren't as diabetes in the family isn't an indication for annual tests (from an Optician).Beware the character seeking personal gain masquerading as a moral crusader.
