Time To Switch

Now Powergen has increased its rates, I'm changing my review to 'Time To Switch'.... the only one left to go with a big rate rise expected is Ebico (could be a 15%-25% rise within 2 months at a guess) so I think nows the time.

The good news is more cashback is available if you switch now than before. Im currently rewriting the article and should have it up on the site tomorrow and in next week's tip.

I wouldn't switch today as all the comparison services will be updating their calculators.

The new article will go on top of the current one at

Im sure its just been overlooked but the terms and conditions of the free champagne has a completion date that has already passed.

"To qualify for this offer you must confirm a switch to a new* gas and/ or electricity supplier using the uSwitch.com comparison and switching service, on the following link only, before 11.00 p.m. on the 12th of July 2006."

    Probably just needs updating?

At least we are all well trained to check the terms & conditions - I was just coming to post the same thing !
  • I was hoping the champagne would cheer us up in these damp, cold drizzly summer nights (with the heating on) !!
  • As one the old fashioned pay quarterly energy users I am still better off with Ebico even with a 25% increase. To match the current price + 25% increase I would have switch to paying by direct debit, which I am not keen to do.

We`ve been on this "switch/don`t switch" merry-go-round before.
I would guess that when the dust settles that most people will be no better off than they are now.
No one likes paying higher prices but because the suppliers can rig the market with so many different prices and deals, this causes confusion to customers, which is what`s intended in the first place.
You cannot compare like with like.
The sites that now make a lot of money are the ones telling you to switch now and save £**************`s.
No wonder they can afford to give £15 cashback if you switch.
Have any of these sites ever NOT found a better deal for someone?
My advice would be to anyone who is still with British Gas to switch to ANYONE,you can only be better off getting away from them.
Everyone else should get their gas and electricity from the same supplier and stick with them.
All this switching business is like a dog chasing it`s tail and as you know, never catching it.

I have this morning applied (through energyhelpline.com....£15 thankyou!) to switch from Powergen, who I've been with now for about 3 years, to Atlantic gas & electricity. Told I should save around £120.
So thank-you Martin for the timely email (and also for the time and effort you put into this fantastic site). Its very much appreciated.

Edit: Oops! Just realised this is my first ever post here. So, hello all! Nice to 'meet' you!

    Welcome to MSE.

I have done the same as you but they said I would save 200.00 (17%) and I already pay by monthly DD so the saving have not come from that.

I switched from BG & Powergen to Atlantic in May and even with all the recent rises am still saving 200 quid a year...more money for down the pub!

    Cheers

  • I'm on a monthly scheme for older people paying £71 fixed a month with generous useage so I don't pay any more than £71.. It's called easywarm and is with Swalec, part of Scottish and Southern and I think Powergen does something similar for over 60s.
When I signed up last november it was £51 a month. I've tried to check if it is still cheaper than paying just for useage but uswitch don't seem to allow you to compare my scheme with others to ensure it is still the cheapest. Any suggestions?

They also told me I could save £139 by switching from Pgen online to Atlantic Internet account.
But unlike you Paul, I don`t believe them, so I`ll hang on to see what Ebico does shortly, who must have been your best saving too.

Because energyhelpline doesn`t get a fat backhander from Ebico they say they can`t switch you to them and urge you to switch to the following
    i.e. (in your case) Atlantic.

Ebico are obviously more ethical than Energyhelpline!
