    Congratulations!!!!

I'm in my (supposedly) final year and can't immagine handing my thesis in at all. It must be a wonderfull feeling.
On a positive note for me though, my husband found out today that they aren't going to re-viva him. In his first viva they almost pulled his thesis to pieces and he had to basically rewrite it for re-submission and re-examination.
So after a year of full time job+ rewriting thesis, and a long wait since he handed it in almost 3 months ago, they have decided to accept the new version and not re-examine. Just need that in writing and then one of us is done :)

i'm allegedly in my final year (so third) but i'm going to need to apply for a fourth for various reaaons..... my supervisors are fine about me getting the fourth but there are always forms to fill out and committees to see!

i just need more data.......which means more time!

Thanks Laserboy! that's interesting to know.

I get a quarterly AHRC bursary which is not considered income for tax purposed, was your's the same? If so, when you filled out applications for cards, did you estimate what your gross income would be if you were paying tax, or just put the actual amount?

    Cheers

My EPSRC grant was paid quarterly and was also not taxed as income. One of the cards I had before I started my PhD. i'm sure that on the other(s) I just entered the annual value of my grant as my income.

As long as you maintain payments, its amazing how much credit companies will throw at you...

I definitely found that I got the majority of my data in my third year. By then you've got better at things, you have the systems set up for whatever you're doing, and its just about cranking the handle and getting lots of data. I bet you surprise yourself with how much can be achieved in the third year in comparison to the previous two!
Good luck and don't panic! :D

Agree totally. I got nearly all my meaningful results in a period of about six months!

    Hello,
hope all are well. Can anyone give me a rough idea of how many words I should write for a 20 minute paper? I am writing my second conference paper at the moment. The first one I wrote was WAY too long but I can't remember how many words it was. I know there is no definitave answer but I have written 2800 and could tie it up now with a conclusion or could write another short section and then tie it up making it about 4500
Thanks to all. Hope you are all studying hard. :A

Hello, I have just read my paper aloud and at 3000 words it is just over 20 mins. If anyone has any tips on giving conference papers though they would be appreciated.
Congratulations to mdb99jh for submitting! You must feel such a sense of relief!:T

    Hi Hosite

Yes, 3000 words sounds about right; obviously depends how fast you talk :)

Tips on giving conference presentations from someone who has given all of about three ;)

    - ask some colleagues if they will listen to it, and try and use a lecture theatre, so you're not phased when you go into one for real
    - take some time to ask people about presentation skills; and again try to ask friends to be (constructively!) critical about any mannerisms you might have (this is extremely useful - it e.g. you're concentrating on not doing something like waving your arms about, you'll be less nervous)
    - make sure your presentation tells a good story, don't forget that you know your subject inside out but few others will, so make sure you do a full introduction
    - try to look at other papers being presented in your session, if possible, and try to read them if they're already published (or just read other papers by the same team) as this looks uber professional if you can refer to other people's work

*edit* just realised you said this is a second paper, so probably the first one isn't quite so critical!

Hello all... a mate of mine is finding it hard knuckling down to write the last bit of his thesis... does anyone here know of somwhere that a student writing up a thesis could go for say 3-8 weeks to finish up writing a thesis?

Could he apply to anyone for extra funding to do this? Any feedback would be so welcome - I'm starting to worry for him!
