I've just opened a thread and realised it might have been better to post here. I'd really appreciate any thoughts on the following:

    Many thanks!

I can't see it being a problem as long as you keep up repayments on those credit cards. I used to have the free overdraft and a couple of credit cards whilst I was doing my PhD; the combined credit limit on my cards was more than my three-monthly EPSRC grant, but that didn't seem to stop the limits increasing. I even managed a couple of 0% balance transfers during my 4th year when things were really tight.
I don't think my credit rating was affected - I guess because I always paid off in full (unless it was a 0% card) I was perceived as a good risk.

Good luck with the rest of the PhD.

Thanks Laserboy! that's interesting to know.

I get a quarterly AHRC bursary which is not considered income for tax purposed, was your's the same? If so, when you filled out applications for cards, did you estimate what your gross income would be if you were paying tax, or just put the actual amount?

    Cheers

i went back to having a student account - if only because it will reset the phasing out of my overdraft to when i finish (if i ever finish that is ;)). i haven't had any of credit limits change and i also applied for a halifax card to get a 0% offer. i do usually pay bills in full each month though, so i don't know what they'll be like if you don't. and i think i put what my gross income would have been on the application based on my bursary...... but i can't be 100% sure on that (that's what i'd do now anyway!).

    Congratulations!!!!

I'm in my (supposedly) final year and can't immagine handing my thesis in at all. It must be a wonderfull feeling.
On a positive note for me though, my husband found out today that they aren't going to re-viva him. In his first viva they almost pulled his thesis to pieces and he had to basically rewrite it for re-submission and re-examination.
So after a year of full time job+ rewriting thesis, and a long wait since he handed it in almost 3 months ago, they have decided to accept the new version and not re-examine. Just need that in writing and then one of us is done :)
