Ok i know you didn't mean it in any not-nice way.
Self funded PhD students have to pay about £3.5k per year bench fees. As well as keeping themselves. So if you look at my hubby who picks up 13k (no tax or n.i. remember) he is actually over 16 grand better off than someone who self funds. So it's a whole lot better off not slightly.
I only pick up 9.5k. But still I'm better off to the tune of 13k compared to someone who self funds.
If someone does fund themselves in a science PhD, to be honest I think they're a little bit mad. I would never consider it. Luckily science PhDs are in general well funded. I think this is the reason why so many people do then, and then that is the reason why you can't do much with just a science Bsc of Msc - cos more and more people have a better degree your Bsc/Msc becomes kinda worthless in trying to get a sceicne related job. It's much easier in a non-science subject where just a Msc will get you a decent job.

Science is a bit strange compared to other areas where a PHD is a must for top jobs. I hope I can come out of the bad books now, please??
Plus, in arts it is normal to self fund PHD that is why so many people do them as a mature student.

Some of us like me have to meet the real world and earning at 21, you are very lucky that you can avoid it so long.

I was working for the real world at 21. If you had read my earlier post asking what the average age of people who read this thread was when they finished their phd or planned to finish their phd, you would have realised that I worked for 1 1/2 years before starting my PhD, making me older than most students!

Oh yes, I saw that you had worked a bit before you started your PHD/DPhil.

I find that sort of strange that some people with a PHD think of themselves as Godly because whilst some lecturers maybe very bright they are completely backward at teaching are some of them. So they do not justify their Godly image of themselves when you consider them as teachers.

That is a reference to no one here, btw!!!

What is this about? You are making no sense here. Maybe you should clarify what you're trying to say?

Are you implying that PhD lecturers think of themselves as Godly?

It is true to say that some people with PHDs can have a chip on their shoulder about how good they are and I am just pointing out that some of them as teachers and lecturers are very poor.
