Nothing whatsover, Oxford calls is a DPhil, everyone else shortens it to a PhD, both of them are Doctor of Philosophy.

Seems a bit daft that, so no one gets a PHD from oxford?

It's just called something different. It's not anything special or different. The work and the process is the same.
PhD is the Latin abbreviation Philosophiæ Doctor

how long did/does everyone's thesis have to be.
I was kinda under the impression that guidelines were approximately the same for all unis, but I was speaking to someone at another uni who has a top limit of half what mine is

PhD is the Americanised version. In years gone by, all UK institutions used to offer the D.Phil. Now it is just Oxford, York and Sussex.

Yes, I slipped through the net and they let me in to do my DPhil here (I call it a PhD, I can't take a DPhil seriously for some reason!!)

Biochemistry isn't that bad....not good enough for me and you though! ;)

Ahhh - I didn't slip through the net - I bolted in through the back door when no one was looking ;)

    Which college are you at?

I have 200 written and I guess I might make it to 220 once complete (pt 12 times roman, 1.5 line spaced). This seems to be on the longer side for the physics thesis from those in my area. However I have seen some well over 300 and others barely 150. I was never given a firm guide on length.

In writing times I have been encouraged not to be too long if possible. There seems to be a bit of a drive to shorten the text.
    2 + 2 = 4
except for the general public when it can mean whatever they want it to.

We have 50,000 word limit for Sciences, 100,000 for humanities/social sciences. That's what I was told. I'm not planning on going anywhere near the word limit! Mine will be full of pretty pictures and not so heavy on the text.

Yup - that's true. My limit was 50,000 - and you had to apply to the board to go over (Zoology Dept). My boyf did his in the law fac and his limit was 100,000.

Misskool - there should be guidence notes on the Graduate Studies Office part of the website. I have a feeling [from my best friend ranting lots at the time] that biochem might have been more than the zoology limits...
