It's only reading this thread that reminded me I have a deep fat fryer, I'm fancying chips now but dread to think when the oil last got changed:eek: .

Surely it depends how often you use it? When mine's in action I'll only use it once a week at the most. Have to admit though, nothing beats homemade chips, (preferably with mayo to dip them in) oven chips don't come anywhere near - however much easier it is to clean up after them.

No I agree, everything in moderation....

Debt - free - chick Hi each to their own but with not liking fried food cant see the point in wasting money on a fryer, not a dig at anyone but surely people dont eat what they dont like.... or do they|?

Perhaps this should be moved to DT, it is more suited to DT.

Just look at the name "DEEP FAT" fryer what some people will voluntarily do to themselves is unbelievable! Yes I'm in the food police camp.

On the rare occasion we have chips they are oven chips.

Oven chips are the work of Beelzebub himself IMHO ;)

Eating a bit of fried or fatty food won’t hurt you; alcohol is a damn sight more harmful to you.

My wife’s sister is always complaining that’s its not fair that I can seemingly eat large quantities of ‘bad’ food & yet never put a pound on whilst she eats like a church mouse & yet is about the size of a church organ.

The fact that I run for around 10 miles - 4 times a week, 2 gym sessions each week + a couple of cycle club outings most weeks & she never moves off her gargantuan backside has – apparently - nothing to do with it.

  • Thanks for all replies :rotfl: not quite the responce I was expecting.

Yep have to agree with the poster that said oven chips are crap.

Tried them once a long time ago and didnt bother again.

And!!! chips taste better from the frier when the oil is a little older in my opinion.

Mine is a stainless steel one that can be completely immersed in water to clean.........dont like the big round ones.
    Bluddy nightmare to clean.

Off now for my sunday lunch........yep I know its Monday but didnt get it yesterday.

Hope thats ok with the food police?;)

I tried oven chips once - couldn't work out if I was eating the chips or the cardboard box they came in :rotfl:

As someone else said, everything in moderation. Eating/drinking too much of anything is bad for you - over-dosing on water can kill.

The houlier-than-thou people who frown on anyone on here who "admits" to eating fried chips are making assumptions. We have a deep fat fryer and eat chips maybe twice a month, so just 'cos you have one, doesn't mean that you use it every day!

A juicy, lean steak with alfalfa sprouts just isn't the same is it

I bought one last week and I've used it twice. I didn't like re-using the oil, although it seems wasteful to use new oil every time. However, if I only use it every other week or so, I think I'll continue to use fresh oil each time. It does make the food taste nicer. We don't eat meat on Fridays and so having some fried scampi and chips is a real treat!

Once you have tasted chips cooked in a deep fat fryer, you can never go back to those pale imitations called oven chips/ microwave chips

We have a deep fat fryer, and only use it occasionally but its worth it for the chips alone.

The downside is the cleaning which is always messy, but then isn't that what husbands are for ? ;)
  • i have one of thoughs ones where you can drain the oil through the tube and then clean it easier. we only use it occasionally but there is nothing better than home made fish and chips made with beer batter , :-)
