Searching for a family member

Options
Hi all, I know this subject has come up in the past but I'm hoping someone can help.

My m-i-l lost touch with her brother 25'ish years ago but after hearing I'm looking at family tree, etc has asked if I can help her find him again. I'm registered on Ancestry and have managed to find his birth, when he got married and when his daughter got married but nothing else. If I search on 192 he is showing on the 2002 electoral roll (I'd say def him as showing his 2 middle initials) but to view any details its saying not only do I have to buy credits, I also have to make a one-off payment of £150!? As much as I love my m-i-l I don't have that kind of money to hand. No other search sites seem to be coming up with much so I'm a bit stumped.

She was concerned he'd have died by now, but looks like there's a good chance he's still around as Ancestry has death records til 2005 and there's nothing showing for him.

I only know where he was living all those years ago and she thinks he moved after then, so have no idea where to start location-wise

Any ideas/hints?

many thanks

Keri

    Hi

if you know when his DD got married, I assume you know where this took place?

Have you tried Facebook for him or his daughter?

Yes, I do have a location for the wedding but it was back in 1978 so is just another location to add to a huge list of possibles.

I have tried facebook but its not a totally uncommon name (Hodder) and the daughter herself would, I guess, be at least 50 now (I know over 50s are totally capable of using facebook, just possibly less likely). If they had an advanced search of some sort I guess it would be easier as I have the daughter's husbands name too (cant find him either)

have you tried googling their name with quotes "missing Hodder"?

if daughter married in 1978, have you checked if she and her hubbie had any children in the following 10 years, as they might well be on face book?

You may have to buy an odd birth certificate, but if you ask for this from the regsitrar in the district involved and specify that you do not want the cert unless the parents are daughter and daughter's husband, you only pay your fee (it was £7 in recent years) if you hit the jackpot.

Thank you for the link. I had read about the Salvation Army helping before and will pass the information on to my m-i-l if I can't come up with anything. But, I thought that if he's definitely on an old electoral roll somewhere I'd have a chance on my own, or was perhaps missing a simple step. And, as they only deal by post I was hoping I'd be able to come up trumps quicker for her

My husband believes they had one child but is not sure that they lived very long. Unfortunately he wasn't very old when he last heard of contact but remembers they had a very sick child. I will continue the hunt though. Thank you

Do you knoiw anyone who lives near the address that they last lived at oin 2002?

if that person goes to the central libary locally, they have a full copy of the Electoral Roll and they could check if they still are registered there.

There are some angels who do that sort of look-up for people.

You can contact the Office Of Population and Censors Surveys. Sorry don't know the address off hand but it is in Scotland. Sure you can google. It is free. I found out information about my Dad through them but he had already passed away. Otherwise the Salvation as has already been said. My brother traced me through them. Also if you are getting no information on 192 it must mean they are ex directory as I got name and address and telephone number of a half brother through them after discovering them on Ancestry.

With the electoral roll though, the person might have opted out, so might not be included on the edited electoral roll that's open to inspection.
Have you thought about a letter asking for help to the local paper in the area where they were last known to live?
