That's not really an accurate reflection now is it!! Could there be a reason why only a quarter of the population watched the last World Cup Final??.....Maybe it was because England weren't in it!!

Are you trying to tell me that if England were to reach the World Cup Final this year, you believe the viewing figures would be the same? Very doubtful, in fact, I would expect that figure to double, at least! Hardly backs up the point that the vast majority of the population don't have the slightest interest in football, a quarter of the population watched the last WCF when England weren't even involved!!
Neither is......Millions! Millions of people like marmite, Millions of people are gripped with "Coronation St" plots, certainly those Millions do not represent the majority of the Country. Your argument is seriously flawed without giving an accurate representation of both "Gripped" and "Ungripped" fever of watching a few guys dance around a pitch with a round muddy object.

For a more accurate representation, it might be a good idea to give us a percentage of those "interested" and those "not interested", I can assure you not everyone is interested, particularly a large proportion of those on MSE, it might be a good idea if we had a poll asking members if they are gripped with this fever (as just because you are does not make it a majority).

I can assure you I am not "gripped" by it, and I know I am not the only one who isn't wearing a t-shirt, flying a flag or chanting "Come on England!". I could go around counting them, but even I know a quick count in my surrounding area, is not even nearly representative of a total population, certainly that I need to count, would be indicative enough to know it is not the majority and I live in the heart of Manchester, where football is talked about quite a lot.

"The vast majority of the population of this country do not have the slightest interest in football."

The comment simply doesn't stand up.

Yes it does. With a population of over 60 million, for the majority to have an interest in football you would be looking at figures over 30 million. This will never happen.

The most popular hobby in this country used to be fishing, not football. Of course all the hype given to soccer makes it appear more popular than it actually is.

No, fishing is (or was) the no.1 participant sport.

Football is, undoubtedly, the no.1 spectator sport in the UK

Funny old thread this, isn't it?

A sales puff of "Football gripping the nation" and people are taking it literally.

Do emails with "Summer Sizzling Offers" or such like get criticised if the summer turns out to be cold and wet????

Maybe because football is such a large part of some peoples lives they are too sad to discuss anything else.
Approach her; adore her. Behold her; worship her. Caress her; indulge her. Kiss her; pleasure her. Kneel to her; lavish her. Assert to her; let her guide you. Obey her as you know how; Surrender is so wonderful! For Caroline my Goddess.

I'm not sure that is right in this case. The thread started off as a justifiable rant about being contacted after opting out...

lol - depends if it was being used as an excuse to breach regulations or not!

OP - email the company back and tell them that they have been reported to the Information Commissioner's Office:

    http://www.ico.gov.uk/complaints/privacy_and_electronic_communications.aspx

The complaints form is about 3/4 of the way down the page.

With a bit of luck, it may put them off spamming anyone else after a "no marketing communication" tick box has been checked?

True, this thread is not really football related, as the OP is questioning why a company would post you a message about your lack of interest in receiving a message from them. As far as I can see, they have gone against the Ops desire.

It reminds me of the Microsoft's "Are you sure?" nag's, I always expect another with "are you REALLY sure?" ;)

Well on the face of it it says that 75% of the population are not interested enough in football to watch (OK an over simplification) which sound like a vast majority to me

And if more watch when England are involved it doesn't actually mean they are interested in football as such, just in how their country is doing.
