Thanks macman, I really appreciate that. I'm in my late sixties so I haven't been bought up with computers like some of you...so I need all the help I can get!
Will certainly upgrade to Win7. Thanks again.

I'm not sure that upgrading is a great idea. In terms of cost and your experience. More details here.

I'm even more uncertain now! Should the fact that it has Vista mean that it's not such a good buy? To cap it all Argos have put a NEW Toshiba 17" L350235 on their Clearance site for £20 less than the refurb. Not that I wanted that one anyway...but nothing's simple in the world of technology is it? I do iron a shirt nicely though :D

It's a nice machine, but I think the cost of the upgrade will make it less attractive. I think it is something like £60.

You can get a cheaper 17" screen laptop, but the build quality and reliability may not be up to scratch.

If you can live with Vista it's a good machine. Otherwise hold on to see what else comes up in the near future.

Argos have a new 18.4" screen Medion Akoya P8610 with a BluRay disc player for £400. But again, it's a Vista machine. Nevertheless, I don't think they'll be on the website for long.

That's tempting. I might have to live with Vista!

If you really want Windows 7 and you go for the Toshiba, I have Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade discs for the Toshiba. Haven't been used as my mum wasn't interested in me installing it on her Toshiba laptop.
You can have them for what I paid. £30 all in.
No obligation though, as the Medion may suit you better, with the bigger screen.

    Just like to add.

I recently bought a laptop (MSI CR610) from argos clearence as a refurb.

It arrived quickly, there was no dings, dents or scratches and in fact you could not tell it from new.

In fact on the back of the laptop order, i now check regularly for anything else that may catch my eye.
Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today!
Cos if you do it today and like it...You can do it again tomorrow.. :p

I'd also like to add I bought my Acer 5542 laptop early in the new from argos clearance at £100 less than on argos site. It came in immaculate condition with all the relevant paperwork and leaflets and I'd definitely make that my first stop in future.

I was given a good bit of advice some years ago - always get the best spec computer you can and it will last longer. My last Dell lasted me over 5 years before I was forced to upgrade. I now have a nice Sony Vaio Windows 7 laptop and I expect it to last quite a while. Only problem is, this time I have outdone myself and the available software is taking it's time to catch up with the spec!
What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare

Many thanks for that offer Donnie, and I would have gone for it, but meantime I found a Dell on the outlet site that I could afford and running Win7. So I've ordered that...only 2gb memory, so maybe not as good as the Toshiba, but it'll do me I think, plus the price of upgrading to W7 or sticking with Vista made me rethink. I just hope I've made the right choice (£366.84 with Vat and Del Grade 1 scratch and dent, 17.3" screen).
I have to say though that I would have no hesitation in ordering from Argos Clearance, as lots of folk seem to be satisfied.
And can I thank, once again, all the folk on here who've been so helpful. I feel almost guilty not buying the Toshiba now!

2Gb with Win 7 should be quicker than Vista with the same.
    Move along, nothing to see.
