We've got a manual Swift and I have to say it's been great, reliable, fun to drive and looks good. I 'd seriously consider them.

I wouldn't bother with the Audi A2, they haven't made them since 2005. However the A1 is being launched soon as a competitor to the MINI so that may be worth a look if they do a proper automatic in it.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

Skoda Fabia (based on VW Polo and cheaper), available as an automatic. 2 in the family one of which is an automatic. Very reliable, comfortable and refined (quient). In fact surprisingly so for a small car.

My last two cars have been Nissan micras - both manual, so can't speak about the automatic - and next week i'm about to a get a new one. Only had one problem with the first one that i had - the timing chain went. When i spoke to a car mechanic friend, he said that its pretty rare that it happens, he seemed to think that the one on my car was probably faulty ( he didnt actually fix it, nissan did). Anyway that aside i would go for a Nissan, they usually reliable!!!

Some 'auto' cars are awful. I tried a Peugeot 107 which was not too bad using the paddles to change gear. In the auto setting the changes were very jerky with a long delay between each gear. Truly horrible.
