Great list, I will second that list.

( Not too sure about the Chevrolet Lacetti tho' ).

It's a nicer car to drive than you might think Inactive, the estate especially is cavernous, and the hatch roomy for it's size.
Bought well they can be fanstastic value for money, old fashioned but simple sort of a replacement for the Corolla that Toyota should have made.

It was the " reliability " factor, more than the driving side of things that caused me a slight concern, I don't doubt the value for money.

I'm afraid none of those except the Swift will be deemed 'pretty' enough.. :-/

Any others that have proper automatic gearboxes?

I concur to avoid the A-Class at all costs. And the MINI too. A 2002 MINI will be a nasty CVT box. CVT works well in some applications such as the Honda Jazz and Nissans but it's rubbish in a MINI. Also in the MINI your mum will need the telephone number of a back specialist, a dentist, hearing aid supplier and someone to sort out the crappy power steering which is guaranteed to go pop.

Would a Focus be considered too boring or too big?

Careful now, I drive one... ;)

Will have a look.. may be a bit big, though she had an E-Class before the Clio. Just want an automatic that doesn't sound like it's always struggling, is reliable and well known.. I'm afraid I don't trust the Japanese and Korean marques so much. I'm thinking a Polo might be the best compromise?

I have an auto Suzuki and I love it.

You don't trust the Japanese or Korean market? Is there a reason for this, considering they have been making quality cars for years?

    Quite,

The Japanese without who's competition European maker's would still be churning out rubbish by the million, and in the case of the Koreans the only makes sold in Britain with a 7 year 100K warranty or 5 year unlimited mileage as standard across their respective ranges...Kia and Hyundai.

Be a cold day in hell before VW etc warrant their cars similarly, only Fiat have ventured into this water with the new Brava/o.
  • Try a Nissan Note, great little automatics, cheap to run too.

    Vauxhall Astra 1.8 ?

    (not the 1.6, that's MMT/Easytronic, not a proper auto)

Pick up 3 year old < 20k mile ones for less than the price of a decent Yaris (ex motability) from the likes of Arnold Clark.
