I saw this thread before heading out this morning and was expecting issues (online not functional for me either), but when I paid for fuel around 3pm all was fine. Just checked online and now fine again (no sign of that error code that I was also getting earlier).

Is everyone else back in aswell now?

Yep - overdramatic OH came in earlier throwing histrionics and insisting his A&L Visa Debit had been cloned as it would not work in the cash machine. Rang A&L and they confirmed fault.

He is still insisting this is the case despite ex-Santander staff member here explaining that the systems have gone down....! Not able to try my card as waiting for a new PIN number but got onto internet with no problems and paid for the shopping earlier fine with OH's card.

Seeing as in the recent past, Halifax, HSBC and Barclays have all had major systems failures, I don't know where you're planning on going? This sort of thing can happen to any organisation.

All banks do have tchnical glitches, however I get the distinct impression that Santander seem to have more than their fair share. I have been with HSBC for ages and in my experience system failures are few and far between. Seemingly Santanders problems do not end with system failures, there is an endless list of other shortcomings. Even though HSBC have been extremely reliable I always keep my Barclaycard just for emergencies.

Just thought id'e add my ten penoth! I was with Abbey (Santander) for years and they were dire for many of them..i eventually moved to Natwest and they are fabulous. I went in to my brach a couple of weeks back to take some savings out and stood there for about 20 mins..nothing new there but i can't be doing with it..i would say it just my branch but after visiting others it isn't. So glad i left tbh.

You are one of many who have been let down by the world's local circus. I dragged my girlfriend away from them and she has never looked back. What did Santander do or not do to P*** you off and make you leave?

Putting my money in Santander might not be 'patriotic', and their customer service may be awful, but at least I have not had to rely on tens of billions of pounds from the UK taxpayer to stop my bank from going under and taking mine and everyone else's money with it. Well, not yet anyway... ;-)

Hi well it may sound daft but the main reason i left was the horrendous queues that i had to stand in ALL the time when i went in there. There were either one or 3 tills open and either way they were as slow..people used to stand there sighing and tutting and tbh it was all very annoying and stressful!
The manager was also highly annoying always trying to get me to take something out..he also used to constantly tell me ide hav my account emptied r.e fraud if i didnt open a seperate account as i was using ebay and it was dangerous..maybe he was right but ill take the risk tbh seeing as i use ebay once a year if that anymore!
There were numerous probs with my cards at times, the service in general just wasn't great.

I now walk into Natwest (i use 2 branches mainly) they are 90% of the time empty, the checkout staff are always very happy and friendly, the service is quick and efficient..what you need really! Like i said never again! Although i do still have a savings account with Abbey them so will have to venture in there to deposit money but far and few between i tell you unless i have a few hours to spare!!
  • You didnt have to stand in the queue! You could do ebanking or use ATM. You dont have to queue in any branch. Let me guess you queued at dinner time? Well duh it is bound to busy aint it! Honestly moaners and groaners get a life for gods sake. There are more important things in life.
