Community care grant

ok this is my thread on moving, which i am getting very very stressed about, not good when you have ms.

I am struggling to get carpet quotes, and removal quotes.

£1300 for carpeting the whole bungalow inc underlay and grippers etc, why do i need this before i move in, well i do get wobbly, and fall down or legs can go without notice, and need to try not cause my body any more damage right now...

Removals £450 inc a bit of packing, because getting a van and mates works out a little cheaper but they won't be insured.

Washer/dryer condensing machine £600 (rounding up here)- personal ms problem i have, my machine is about to pack up split glass door hanging off, and i should of got one when i did have the spare cash but instead paid for son's frech exchange trip instead.

Applying for ccg, but like i said struggling to get 3 quotes off everything.

The stress is causing me to relase again, not good.

will ccg give me money to help, will they tell me to get lost. am desperate and have no one to turn to for financial help within the family (parents are in france and are scaping by with pension)

I hope to be fortunate and get the double housing benefit as both propertes are local authority and i have good grounds for the extension of month, they even said that on telephone.

£1300 sounds expensive for a quote for carpets. I helped a friend furnish her property and it cost just £300, including delivery, to carpet a large 2 bedroom flat from Carpetrite and £165 for the carpet fitter advertising on Gumtree who supplied the grips. This excluded underlay but the carpet was from carpetrite where they had a huge selection for £4 to £5 a square meter. Off the top of my head, I think her carpets were £5 or £6 a square metre so there was scope to make a saving on that purchase of £300 by a good 10 or 20%.
You can get appliances off Freecycle, Freegle, Gumtree freebies for nowt or from local charity furniture shops or places like Emmaus at low cost.

I done my whole flat for £400 of ebay. CCG grants normally only pay up to £1000 anyway. They didn't give me nothing. The van we hired was £67. My husband had to move it all himself.

OMG it was carpetrite who came and measured, i explained to the woman on the phone i needed to get 3 quotes and could i keep the measurements, she said yes, but the guy who came to measure refused, i can see why, but whats the point of saying yes if the guy is going to say no.

Our freecycle is a waste of space, tbh i would rather get a new machine that will last me a very very long time and not something that i will have to replace last year :(

Thanks for the info, about how much they do pay,

unfortunately i know no one who has a van, and i don't want anyone who is not insured, i don't have much and what i do have needs to last.

Carpets - can you look for offcuts or end of rolls? (Not sure how easy it is for you to get round the shops for a look.) Or round our way there's a local market trader who sells end of rolls and also fits, works out a lot cheaper than places like carpetrite. Plus the price varies according to the quality of the underlay which is where some people make their money, so if you need to get the price down you could look into that.
Are you sure you meet the criteria for a community care grant rather than a loan?
And I really can't see you getting £600 for a washer dryer when Argos do them from £330. Might not be your choice of brand, but if it does the job......(It was Argos prices we used when applying for a CCG, and we didn't get anywhere near the amount we asked for. That was for someone moving out of residential care who had to start from scratch as they had no household items at all.)
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

well this is because I was told I had to move into housing that was for my needs.

If i stay i will always be housebound, as they can't /won't provide a ramp as my front door opens to a communal walkway :(

I think you may get some help but it is unlikely to be as much as you are asking.

I'm not sure why you are struggling to get quotes...

If the main things is you getting stressed, could you write down the items you need and then put possible places for a quote next to them. Check them out one by one and cross off as it's done. Works for me sometimes.

Can you just get online quotes for things like the washer/drier - as in print off pages from stores?

For carpets, do you have carpet companies advertise on your local paper? Mine is full of them and they would come out to your current home, take the measurements you have for the new house, show you some samples and give you a quote.

    Same for removal companies...?

I think you may as well go for it now, as you've made a start. They may say no, but it is a definite no if you don't try.

Take a deep breath, and put aside a morning to arm yourself with a local ad paper and a telephone/computer and start the ball rolling. Tell yourself it is going in by a certain time and just go for it.

Is it possible to call them and ask if you can use prices from the internet and add it up yourself. So you could price up a carpet online, add delivery and print off all the pages, including the fitting charge?

That's what I would do anyway.

What was the cost breakdown - carpet per square metre, underlay and fitting?

It must be the fitting price that has bumped this up. Get an independent carpet fitter to come round and give you a quote to fit and supply grippers. My carpet fitter, found on Gumtree, gave me the exact measurements for me to take to anyshop I wanted.

I chose carpetrite where the carpet, not their cheapest one either, came to £275, plus £30 delivery (not including underlay). I don't have the measurements now for that flat but it was a 2 bedroom flat with large living room (20 feet plus), plus large double and small single bedroom, a couple of tiny hallways.

I always try to avoid the stores from supplying the fitting. For example, homebase estimated up to 4k to fit a kitchen they sold to my friend for 2k. I found an independent kitchen fitter who did it for less than 1k. Retail stores are notorious for their extortionate services - just buy the goods from them and find the labour elsewhere.

Well the c.c.g. line is still engaged, but found an intendant carpet shop who are fitting the carpet today the whole bungalow no underlay, felt back carpet, apparently didn't need the underlay, for £575 inc fitting and fixtures. What a huge difference, had to take a loan off a mate to do this, but means i can get stuff moved in.

If c.c.g line is constantly busy i wonder if i can go to a job centre and sit down with someone and go through the application?

Have you considered renting a washing machine? Try ringing the local repair guys - we pay £10/month for an all singing all dancing machine. Means we don't have to think about repair costs but get a better quality machine than we could afford otherwise.
