Are you installing the correct drivers for your OS? You don't say what OS you are running?
Go to the Logitech website to get the newest version, and try that.

OK probably a stupid question but the Logitech site asks not only which OS - XP but also 32 bit or 64 bit and I have no idea what that means or how to find the information.

Which version of XP? Right click My Computer, General tab.
But if you don't know the difference, odds on you are running 32 bit XP Home.

I thought it was too good to be true.
Went on to the logitech site to download the software. All seemed to be going well, then - approx 3/4 way through download everything stopped. Couldn't move mouse icon etc. Only recourse was manual shutdown.
I could understand if I had bought an 'unknown brand' cheapy, but a reputable make should work.

If it's stopping on the download then it's nothing to do with Logitech, as you haven't started the installation procedure. Something else is causing it to hang.
How much free disk space do you have? C drive, right click, Properties.
Try downloading something else to see if there is a problem generally with downloading.
If you have another PC, download to that, copy it onto a flash drive and install from that.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
