Broadband Speed

We live in an area with very poor broadband (aylesford exchange). Is there anyone that we can contact to see if they can improve the service? Is this the job of the council, or just down to BT...?

thanks!

    The council don't supply broadband...
Who is your ISP and what is the particular problem with your broadband?
There are no LLU providers on your exchange, so your connection will be running on BT's network regardless of your ISP.
It all depends what the problem is, you need to give more info to get more assistance.

  • Sorry for the lask of info. As you may have guessed I have no clue about this sort of stuff...

o2 provide my broadband. I have checked the speed and some times its 1.4mbs (i can cope with that - just about) and other times its doen to 0.2mbs.

I've read all the tricks of the trade to speed it up, but was really asking who my neighbours and I contact to get the exchange unbundled? Or is it just hard luck and be patient?

    Thanks!

OK, so you are on the dreaded O2 Access package. That was your big mistake.
Your exchange will never be unbundled, there are only about 4,000 subscribers, no telecoms company would get a sufficient customer base from that to get any return on the cost of unbundling.

Your best bet is to move to another non-LLU ISP that can offer better speeds than O2.
Also suggest you post your router stats in case there is a problem with your line or internal wiring/set up.
Use the exchange mapping tool on samknows to compare your actual speed with what that says you should be getting.
Your other problem may simply be distance from the exchange. However, if your speed is better in the day and then drops off horribly in the evening, then it's simply the usual contention ratio problem on O2 Access.

  • thanks macman.

Maybe I should cancel my o2 and sign up to vfast? Do you know much about that? Its more expensive but they reckon I can get 10mbs...

Only what it says on their website. Wireless delivery-how much are they quoting you?
I suggest that first you work through the various fixes to ensure you are maximising the speed on your current BT connection.

Macman could I jump in here - sorry OP!- and ask who is the best ASDL broadband provider to go for ? My daughter has the same sort of exchange and has waited 5 weeks for AOL to reconnect so far.

Reckon that must be a candidate for one of the UK's smallest exchanges-117 subscribers only!
No LLU now or ever, so you'll need to go for a decent non-LLU service.
I thought AOL Platinum was a legacy package? What price is that based on? The only tariff that AOL's website show shows is 'Just Broadband' at £14.99?

I dont know :) they moved from a bigger village where they had pipex and before that they had aol platinum (I think!) My exchange is MUCH bigger, it has 181 subscribers ! I feel like a big city type now...:)
Can you suggest a list of non LLU providers ? (whatever the hell they and it is LOL!)
