That depends on which Uni you go to - how generous they are. My son got £320 which is the minimum they can give. Luckily they award £500 in the form of vouchers for good attendance/handing in assignments on time. He can spend this on books, stationery, rent or topping up his Oyster card.Over futile odds

Well he should be able to know how much accomondation costs.
You know how much he is getting.
Food will be around £70-£100. Travel expenses. Going out.
Easily work it out, just write the numbers downKaleidoscope27 wrote: »Wait until you get confirmation of what loans and grants he's getting. Then take away accomodation costs. Then see what's left. When I was at uni (2005 - 2008) I lived off £50 a week. Assuming cost of food has gone up (which it has), then maybe £75 a week if you like. That's including food, socialising, travel around the town etc. Saying that my sister gets £50 a week but she has an expensive lifestyle so has a part-time job to add to that. (She's also devoured her overdraft - not recommended.)
Jeez, what food do you two buy??
It never costs that much to feed one person for a week!!
£70 a week in this house feeds two 'adults', a child, a dog, a cat and provides toiletries/cleaning products/printer paper etc too!! And if you look on the oldstyle board, that is expensive!!
£50 should be more than enough after rent and bills.0 -
I manage to live off £50 per week. About £20 of that goes on food.Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

Hi amsonli1
My son is too hoping to go to Lincoln as well in Sept.
I agree with the others about doing some sums. If he hasnt already , I would get his application in for student funding then that should give you an figure of what he will get. The accommodation for the Lincoln on campus accomm is £4160 for ensuite or £3720 for non ensuite.
Sit down with him and work out a realistic budget- transport costs will be as unless you live locally he will be wanting to come home, my son has already told me he's coming home to bring his washing to keep costs down
. For us there isnt a rail link so he probably wont bother with a rail card and he will rely on parents to transport him to and fro as he has decided to wait to get a car although he is having lessons.
- TV licences need to be costed in
- Insurance up to £4000 is provided with the accomm.
- Books and stationery although he they may not know what books they will need until they get there
- Cost in any field trips they need to go on as these can be several hundred pounds
- Council tax if applicable
- Mobile phone contracts
- Regular sports
- Any payments for credit cards or loans
Good luckMortgage, we're getting there with the end in sight £6587 07/23, otherwise free of the debt thanks to MSE help!0 - transport costs will be as unless you live locally he will be wanting to come home, my son has already told me he's coming home to bring his washing to keep costs down

Students don't pay council tax, but after the first year they may move into a flatshare with someone who is not a student. I don't think it happens very often at undergraduate, but it can. Obviously the non-student will have to pay (75% of the normal cost), and it could be expected that the student help with the cost.
OP, you'll need to sit down and do the sums. If he is getting the full loans and grants then you aren't expected to provide any financial help, although you could if you were able. Also think about necessity, for example, in accommodation an en suite would be nice, but it's not really necessary.0 -

I'm afraid I'd say tough luck for moving in with students!
The student would not be liable and should not be expected nor feel obliged to offer anything towards the council tax!0
