My son is due to go to Lincoln Uni in September, and should get full loans/grants etc based on my salary - any idea roughly how much extra per week i will have to fund him?? he is hoping to stay in halls of residence for the first year.

If he gets full loans plus grant, you're not expected to give him anything.

Well he should be able to know how much accomondation costs.

You know how much he is getting.

Food will be around £70-£100. Travel expenses. Going out.

Easily work it out, just write the numbers down :)

    Hi,

Definately agree with Lokolo about sitting down and doing some sums. Take rough accomodation costs away from the loan and then see what's left. Then you can work out if its possible to live on it.

As a thought, he could also get a part-time/weekend job to earn some extra funds if needed? I worked for the student's union during my degree - very flexible with regards to hours so could be adapted to my workload and pay was ok too

Wait until you get confirmation of what loans and grants he's getting. Then take away accomodation costs. Then see what's left. When I was at uni (2005 - 2008) I lived off £50 a week. Assuming cost of food has gone up (which it has), then maybe £75 a week if you like. That's including food, socialising, travel around the town etc. Saying that my sister gets £50 a week but she has an expensive lifestyle so has a part-time job to add to that. (She's also devoured her overdraft - not recommended.)

I lived (and still am) quite happily on just the full grant!

If they get a part-time job, it will fuel their alcoho.... I mean food requirements :D

If they are getting full loan + full grant, that's a lot of money (~8k) which is more than enough for a single individual to live off.
  • thats useful thank you....according to the government calculator thingy he will get about 8500 loan and grants so hoping he should be fine, cant believe how much halls of residence cost though !

I get about the same and have managed to save quite a lot of it. He should be able to do the same.

He could most probably save a lot and do something with it after uni, such as house deposit, or go travelling.

My lad's at Uni in London, he gets a bit more on his loan for London. He gets the full grant and loan and also got a couple of bursaries from the Uni in his second term which helped. His accomodation is £104 per week and I do him an online Tesco shop once a month to top him up in basics like cereal, pasta, freezer stuff and toiletries, that usually comes to about £40-£50. If he needs fresh stuff in between he buys it and his lunch when at Uni. I think if they get the full whack, they can live off it easily if they're not daft with it. Son said some of his mates blow their grant on expensive meals out, tattoos and clothes as soon as they get it, but he's been brought up to be careful with money so only spends if he needs to, like he suddenly realised he didn't have a winter coat, and with all those designer shops in London he bought one from Primark and it's fine.

In preparation for him going, it might be prudent to put away a few quid if you can, or he can if he has a part-time job, to tide him over at the start of term if his money doesn't appear immediately and for the unknown expenses that crop up.

  • All his utilities are included in the halls rent which is why it will seem high, but his meals may be included too. I know most of the halls at Newcastle uni offer this. I would check his paper work assuming he has some.
  • Also if he gets full grant and loan he will get a full bursary, mine was £1250 rising to £1750 this year, not to be sniffed at!
