Is this a scam - very convincing!

My feedback total has just reached 100 and I have received an email allegedly from ebay congratulating me on my Turquoise star and it has a button for me to click and download my certificate. I don't click on anything that I get from ebay in my email - I always go to my messages in My Ebay - and this message isn't there so I'm assuming it must be a scam - but I have to say it's a very convincing email - full of very professional graphics and no spelling mistakes and it includes my user name etc - looks very like the genuine emails - but when you put the mouse over the links they all go to addresses that start https://www.click2.ebay.com/ followed by numbers but in other - genuine emails the links all go to https://www.pages.ebay.co.uk. Am I right to be suspicious or am I being too paranoid????

Defo a scam and as you stated all "genuine" messages will appear in you ebay inbox.

    Just forward it to spoof@ebay.co.uk

Ebay do send out certificates to download, by the way.

I'm not saying this is or isn't a scam.

  • I have had emails re various certificates before 'my messages' appeared in my summary page. I never bothered to download them as I really didnt see the point! I have a feedback score on screen so I see it every time I log on - a certificate is just another piece of paper / file to clutter the home or PC up with!

They do send out certificate emails when you reach the next star. Forward it to spoof anyway, but it might be fine.

I've received an email from paypal today claiming I've paid a hotmail account £200; I've not been buying and it's not in ebay (I trust that paypal would be same as ebay?) as I have only used paypal on ebay, I've checked my paypal account and that seems to be in order - the same money I had in it over weekend and I've only sold recently, should I send the email to spoof@ebay or is there a specific place to send them with paypal?

....and it includes my user name etc ..

As no-one else has picked it up.... Genuine e-mails use your register REAL name, not your user name.
