Slow Cooker Lid Broken.....eek

Through the kindness of someone from my local Freecycle group, I now have a slow cooker :T Unfortunately, as the lovely lady was putting it into a bag for me, she dropped the lid and it smashed  She had a spare saucepan lid (metal one) that seems to fit it just fine. Do you think this will be ok or is there some secret, magic reason why my slow cooker needs its own lid? Thanks

    Hi,

I broke the lid of my slow cooker and used it for ages afterwards with a suitable saucepan lid.

Never had any problems, and the food tasted just the same.

For a slow cooker to work properly it needs to be able to keep the heat in. When the slow cooker is on, usually a film of water will appear around the lid. This forms a seal. If the saucepan lid fits and this water seal appears you should be fine, however if the lid is not a good fit then no water seal can appear and the heat will escape.

Your best bet is to give it a go, try your favourite dish and see if it cooks alright, if not then just stick it in your normal oven and enjoy it a bit later!

Alternatively, how badly broken was the old lid? could you glue it back together?

Smashed to smithereens! I didn't bother to take the pieces when I picked the slow cooker up.
I'll give the pan lid a try some time this week - if it doesn't work I'll attempt to get a replacement for the model of slow cooker.
    Thanks :D

i always had a water seal when i had the big slow cooker, i now have the ten pound one from argos and it doesnthave a water seal but works just as good, you could always put tin foil on first if the lid didnt fit right

I dropped the lid to mine as well. Since then i have used a lid that 'almost' fits and put a teatowel under it first. Probably not hygenic (ha ha) but it works ok. suppose you could use foil wrapped around the lid to make it a tad bigger.

When I was younger I broke the lid of my Mum's slow cooker - she was NOT impressed!! It only broke into 3 and so Dad superglued it together and then Mum wrapped the lid in silver foil and it worked fine for years afterwards!

As previously said, it's the water seal that's the key!
