I love the random chats you have on trains. Only to discover you're in fact cousins. Or went out with each other 20 years ago. Or spend time in a strange corner of a world called MSE..0 -
But you often don't make decisions that can lose you money every single week of the rest of your life. No pressure, LIR.

If you find "the one", then timing isn't the only thing that's important.
This. Times 10,0000.
Now I think this should be stickied as the only thread and this board should finally be put out of its misery.0 -

Tell him about the Brighton Hotelier ......
Seeing that reminds me..... don't suppose your other half rang Richard Bacon on Radio 5 yesterday did he?
Moaning about people he has had coming in his shop and stating how they could make stuff like that etc etc.
Suppose there must be a few independent fashion type peeps based in Brighton.... but not that many?0 -

but I think LIR is getting a mortage?PasturesNew wrote: »That is a poor person's view.... :P
There are loads of us cash buyers out there who won't be borrowing (unless I give in and raise a tiiiiiny mortgage on something I've spotted). I think it's £50/month interest only though, so hardly counts.0 -

we got shot of our shop last Match (after 11 yrs) and I now have a concession business connected to a large chain so, still indie retail in essence, but on a larger (and safer for the moment) scale.
We also go online again with a corp mid May so will get direct sales online from that.
We also have a large-ish export wholesale going on that came by accident from the above......
Do I miss having my own shop? Not at all and we were offered the concession thing back in 2003 and turned it down (as I was too worthy back then) so, with hindsight, I would say I wish we'd stop battling the evil LL a lot sooner. Incidentally, the new tenant is leaving already and my chain neighbours all ended up getting their rents (and rates) reduced by 35%.
The most often said comments we had were ''Oooh, we don't have shops like this in Milton Ketynes or wherever'' followed by '' Where are your other branches, do you have one in x?''.
So, one year on, we trade in 4 major cities on a percentage of sales that will be easy-ish to pull back should sales collapse for any reason.
I guess we just got a bit lucky in gthe end.0 -

I do feel that when you get to the stage that you are mildly dissing your customers (and I do relate to the above) it may be time to move on. I know some indies who almost feel that the customer should be 'grateful' for them being there rather than the other way around.
It's a 2 way thing.
I have heard the exact comment from an art gallery owner/photographer so maybe it was him...we meet up for a drink next week so I will find out.:)0
