How are they meant to know that! Aren't they supposed to be impartial? I'd have had a word with some of the party representatives that stand outside the polling station.
We're only a small polling station, no people outside.

It happened after I voted, I did it in front of the desk, I was the only one in there apart from the 2 behind the desk.
I mentioned I was taking my time as I didn't want to vote for the BNP by mistake, then he said most of the people had.
I still can hardly believe my ears, he said some other stuff which I'm not going to say on here, local stuff about local people. The other guy looked uncomfortable.
I asked him 3 times if he was serious, because it was so surreal what he said.
I don't think they are council workers, I think they are local people.

The people behind the desk are always council workers. The only reason I know is my wife is in LG and as done it before and friends of hers are doing it again this year.

It is not a volunteers post as it is part of the local councils duty's to over see and adjudicate votes. Also they would not be allowed to give a list of voters to anyone other than a council worker as it would break Data protection laws.

Must admit my local polling station surprised me this morning....I had to queue! Normally it is like one man and his dog but not this morning.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

One of the people behind the desk was someone in our village. Retired...maybe its part of each?

Anyway, the very first people, volunteers, as you go in, surprised me with telling me we had a local voe today too...I'm sure I just did one of them recently. the conversation went

    lir: two votes?
volunteer: yes, the local and the conservative
    lir: local and what?
    volunteer: local and conservative
lir: think you might mean general
volunteer: (goes bright red) er, yes, sorry . Its what I mean really though.

Volunteer was a rather elderly lady who also tried to drect me to the door to the loo to vote, not the door to the room where we vote. :)

Could be a councilor perhaps, but AFAIK they have to be official in some way for obvious reasons (EG ballot papers, voters lists, fraud etc).

I don't believe people who vote for the BNP really know how crazy some of their policies are....ok you may agree with them on immigration etc....but did you know that they would abolish anti-discrimination laws so that employers would be free to reject jobs to women, the disabled or if the employer considers you too old....now that would affect a lot more people than just the 'darkies' that they so hate...by making it lawful to discriminate against women, they would be disadvantaging 50% of the population!

The people outside the polling station, asking for your number, are volunteers... normally representatives of local candidates. Who ask you for your number.

The people inside the polling station are council workers... normally local pensioners, the unemployed, the underemployed, and Money Saving Experts looking for quite a nice tidy wage for a days easy work.

There are rules for both... the outside people are not supposed to be canvassing, the inside people shouldn't really say anything much to you at all.

OK, I take back what I said earlier. I voted. I always seem to do it, even though I know it will not make a blind bit of difference. But I wanted StevieJ to make his money. I voted Lib Dem.

The first offer out usually goes to current council workers that is why I highlighted one. :D
