Another shout for Pistonheads - sold my old fiat which would otherwise have gone for scrap. Different league in terms of price (£50), but also a difficult car to sell - no MOT or tax, very tired old girl in general, fix-up or spares only. Sold to a young enthusiast who wants to fix it up and give it the TLC it needs, so happy it will live on rather than getting crushed!
    Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!

Great way to get about £800 for a car worth £2K+

    Nice! :j

but it will be gone, if it just sitting rusting and that's really all it's worth. I got shot of an old fiesta that way and got more than I expected. Trouble is peoples expectations are unrealistic.

But its not sitting rusting, its a very good, decent car thats worth an easy £2-2.5K all day long. Why would you ever risk putting it on ebay with no reserve and a low start price?

The cheapest comparable in the UK at the moment is at £2250, so its easy to see why the O/P hasnt been getting any interest at £2995, BUT thats not to say its worthless.

I'd say theres quite a difference in 'getting shot of an old fiesta' and finding the right buyer at the right price for what is still a decent car.
  • yea but it's still sitting there !!!!!

this is getting circular - so just 'get rid' on ebay by setting no reserve and a low starting price.

    Fantastic advice

Lot of money for a car thats almost 10 years old.

Plenty of alternatives for less money, And lots of people want diesel's

I bought a 2004 mondeo estate last year for less than £2500.

Why is it not good advise? You can carry on dreaming your car is worth £x and have it sitting around forever or except what you can get for it and have it gone? You could start it at £2K if you wanted but the higher the start price the more likely it will still be left sitting on your drive.

Its not good advice because you are proposing listing a car with no reserve and with a low start. For something like that volvo this would be a recipe for getting a bad price for it. Fine for a car that might generate a lot of interest or is very popular, but how many potential petrol volvo estate drivers will have ebay and be bidding on it, compared to say, a fiesta?

Any form of auction would be a last resort. The only issue at the moment is that the O/P has set too high a price. You cant simply say, its not selling at £3K, therefore nobody wants it, therefore 'get rid' at any price.

In the same way as a Merc estate could be worth several times more than a mondeo estate, there will be a market who specifically want a Volvo and will pay more than a mondeo for it.
  • Thanks to all for you thoughts/ideas.

Just a quick update.... we DID drop the price, but only by £250! We held out for another few days and a lovely chap turned up and bought it on the spot!
