but you could probably identify the smell of different armpits. doesn't make it pleasant.
given that some people can't actually tell their !!!! from their elbow after a few drinks i don't see why you would want to spend that much on single malts. but then i don't see why people rave about different makes of handbag either.
1. depends whose armpit as to how pleasant.
2. but the first drink (or only drink) you cantaste and walk away correctly identifying any body part from another
3. ...I like some bags, dislike more Nothing would make me pay some of the amounts though. My main handbag ATM cost £25 in a 75% off sale. I thought that was ok. I do have a moschino...gift, and an osprey..gift. Neither chosen by me...I'd probably have asked for thermal wellies or something!:o0 -
do people actually like the taste of single malts (i mean, is there a discernable nicer taste of one over the other) or is it more an appreciation of the craft that went into them and the exclusivity factor?
Both. The taste is enormously different; very peaty Islay's - the Ardbeg I mentioned will "blow your head off", but has a wonderful lingering taste; while a Lowland like Auchentoshan is much much smoother. There are also all sorts of variations on storage - for instance the barrel might be flavoured with Port, Sherry or even Sauternes, and you can pick that fragrance up in the whisky.
Some people will also talk about the craft, and the height of the stills - but I've never been sober enough to remember why that's important.
However the exclusivity and marketing is a huge point. There is also a machismo about whisky, especially the Islays.
Finally you can debate for hours how whisky should be drunk. Some will say half-and-half with water to release the flavours and allow the whisky to breath. Some will insist on it being neat (but then drink it on ice!)
And others will say "if drinking it with cola, or ginger ale, is okay with scots, it's okay with me".0 -
this is the drink of choice among several youth cultures too. particularly those who are into r'n'b, hip-hop and rap music. i'm guessing your mother doesn't fit into this category though.

How dare you suggest my mum isn't down wiv youth culture.
That's really interesting. I wonder whether that targetting/market-positioning goes on in the UK. I'll ask my brother...0 -

well quite. for me this makes it a waste of money whilst for others this is a bonus.
i wonder single malts will be taken up like cognac by sections of youth culture just like barbour coats and hunter wellies are the height of cool among certain hoxton square dwellers.
that might spoil the original image for some though. Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0 -

yes hennessey is quite popular in the lyrics i believe. and they refuse to mix it either just like single malt devotees.
Hennessy, the most popular cognac brand in America, with over half the market, estimates that young blacks now buy 60 to 85 per cent of all the bottles it sells in the US. Hennessy - "Henny," "Henn-dog," or "Henn-roc" - is idolised in scores of rap lyrics.

I doubt they buy a good bottle of courvoisier or martell though more likely going for a bottle of 3 barrels (OK it is just a brandy but it is only where the grapes are from that makes the difference, well that and the quality.:))0 -

Well, from my perspective, despite what I said earlier, I don't actually drink very much, and hate the sensation of being drunk, so I would much rather go for something with a lot of taste which I drink very slowly, compared to something sold in quantity.
Spending a lot of money on a bottle of whiskey isn't that much of a problem for me, since I'm unlikely to need to buy another for quite some time.“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”

I think it was Busta Rhymes who did Pass the courvoisier. IIRC courvoisier is also a drink of choice in the bronx...PasturesNew wrote: »I see you're working up to asking the dirty questions ... it'll probably be by page 4 though.
Am I stealing your thunder PN?;) I had to get it in quick. Plus, with an inkling as to who the OP could've been (though damn him for not using my phenomenally excellent suggestion for a username, which when he does use will result in tons of thanks from the jelly).
On drinking, I virtually never drink now. Simply cos I am a wuss & it makes me bad. I always have been. Half a lager & I'm anybody's. Most of it tastes really bad imo. I don't see the point if you're not going to like it.
I drank spirits a couple of times. The last time made me really bad. Never, ever since. Will never touch spirits. The smell of whisky makes me heave.
In reality, the only thing I'm likely to drink would be wine. Sparingly...It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0
