My perspective is that stockpiling whiskey, and packets of crisps makes much more sence.

As long as you aren't picky about how long you are stockpiling them for:D

I'd recommend stockpiling whisky instead. It's much more likely to appreciate in value if armageddon turns out not to be around the corner after all. And if it is, well scotch tastes better. I can particularly recommend Glenmorangie Signet, The Macallan or of course any of the Islay malts; Laphroaig, Lagavulin or Ardbeg.

How could anyone stockpile Glenmorangie Signet, The Macallan , Lagavulin or Ardbeg? It would not pass the door of my house without being 'tested' for autheniticity. And, indeed, my dear sir, I do not think one test is enough to make such an important decision.

do people actually like the taste of single malts (i mean, is there a discernable nicer taste of one over the other) or is it more an appreciation of the craft that went into them and the exclusivity factor?

The combination of Stone's and a blended whisky (please, don't damage a malt) is an excellent [STRIKE]coalition, particularly popular as a stirrup cup amongst hunting folk.[/STRIKE]
Sorry peeps, I'm trying to avoid political chat, but it's very difficult! :o

I, in a stunning lack of ''ladylike grace'' unfortunately rather typical of me, love a good single malt whisky. Amazingly, my palate for wines is also becoming gradually more discerning, easier now I drink so much less.:o

I like them. I like them very much. Except Laphroaig. They really do taste very good. I know people who can tell exactly where any single malt came from in a blind taste test... I'm not that refined, but I know they taste much better.

There was a bar in Manchester where they sold over a 100 different single malt's... heaven.

I am in the privileged position of having a brother who works for Moet Hennessy, so a fair amount does pass our door, and in sufficient volumes that it lasts a few weeks before needing restocking. Because you're quite right, one test is never enough.

My mother has also taken to Cognac, or more accurately, Hennessy XO. As a result of this, my brother finds he spends - even at staff rates - considerably more on booze than he used to. An interesting study in microeconomics!!

but you could probably identify the smell of different armpits. doesn't make it pleasant.

given that some people can't actually tell their !!!! from their elbow after a few drinks i don't see why you would want to spend that much on single malts. but then i don't see why people rave about different makes of handbag either.

this is the drink of choice among several youth cultures too. particularly those who are into r'n'b, hip-hop and rap music. i'm guessing your mother doesn't fit into this category though.
