Licence = English

License = US English

Come on guys overide your American spell checkers, unless of course you advocate we become the 51st State?

Edit:- Licence as in Driving Licence (see below)... :)

    Licence is the noun in 'proper' English but license is the verb IIRC.

    Pointless to rant about spell checkers!

    The verb is "license", the noun is "licence", spell checkers don't know if you are using the verb or the noun! You need your grammar checker for that!

    It naffs me off too! I'm glad somebody brought it up.

    License is a perfectly valid spelling, but only when the word is used as a verb.

    The rules are easy...

    Noun: A licence

    Verb: To license

    So you buy a licence at a licensing office.

    It's exactly the same with advice...

    Noun: Some advice

    Verb: To advise

    And so on.

    If it's any consolation, Americans aren't consistent either. Many use C's when, strictly speaking, they should be using S's.

    The School of hard knocks and the University of life did not go much in to grammar (or is that grammer or is there even 2 m's in it)

    Who cares as long as people know what you mean

    You've joined the club of fools who have embarrassed themselves by making a spelling mistake in the same sentence as telling others to use a spell checker! In your case, you've spelt "override" wrong. There are two r's.

    Here's a tip for you and anyone else who likes to feel big by pointlessly correcting other people's minor mistakes. Make sure your own spelling and grammar are up to a good standard first.

    Those who criticise other people's spelling almost always make a fool of themselves in the process. Have a read of Skitt's Law.
