What is a good child friendly breed of dog?

I know Labradors are not small, but they get my vote for living with children.
Loving & patient dogs, I have one left out of three and my kids have grown up with them and are now teenagers without any incidents.
Good luck in your search.0 -
Amazing that some people think other people are shirty ,just because they dont agree with them !0

Can I just add whatever pup you decide on ,chose your breeder carefully .
Any reputable breeder will have a waiting list and will want you to pass an interview first before letting you have one of their dogs .
You dont want the best breeder because you want to show your dog or for kudos but because good nature can be bred for and exaggerated in a breed ,as can aggression ( it has been scientifically proven )
So to give you the best chance of a good natured dog ,start with a well bred one0 -
Whatever breed you decide to go for, research thoroughly and not just on this site. Get a wealth of opinions and information.
I think some small dogs can be snappy and no particular breed, we have had no problems with our Shih Tzu , but she is the only Shih Tzu I have ever had had any experience of so I can't really generalise about the breed . Ours never even barks and is an incredibly friendly and gentle dog. The only thing you should be really aware of with Shih Tzus is that although they do not shed their coats and leave dog hair all over, they need brushed every day and regular grooming. They coats get very long very quickly and unless you are prepared to do it yourself they need to go to a groomers every 2-3 months. I have never really found ours to be smelly to be honest.

I love pugs, but....I just can't support the breeding of them: too many problems in this dear, dear breed. Pug rescue is often busy though...many pus are ''orphans'' when their owners die/go into homes.
The problem with pugs and young children is oftn BOTH need a carry at the same time.
I was a little kid in a house of big dogs..and survived well....its more the issue that some dogs can be very slow to mature and going through their terrible teens at the time your also dealing with terrible twos. Its very possible, many people do it. But, it might be an idea to fulfil your want/need for a pet with finding an adult dog proven to be good with children: just to cut you all some slack really....0 -

I think it is harder to get a rescue adult pug than buy a puppy. I did think that was a good idea, until I looked on the Pug rescue sites, there is massive waiting lists. Otherwise I would have gone down that routeBest Comp wins[/B]: , Holiday to Las Vegas worth £3K, £200 shoes, £130 ASOS voucher, £150 River Island Voucher, £100 Toni & Guy Voucher, £250 Red Letter Day Voucher, Holiday to NYC[/COLOR]0 -

Only problem is their breathing, but I would be sure to not let overheat, so that shouldn't be a problem, lots of people own them with no complaints
Let us know what dog you eventually get..
I think you can get different sized staffies as ours is a medium sized one - the pics of them as puppies are so cute! I'd like one that stayed that size!
My friend had a Golden Retriever and he is as big as a horse - I dread to think about all the dog hair shedding!!
Good luck anyway, I'm sure you will love it!0 -
Good luck with whatever you decide it's up to you at the end of the day, and as long as you are willing to put in the work and stick with it then go for it! But you will be busy!
Not sure if you are aware? I don't know a lot about Pugs but if you were looking for a well bred one I know the pups seem to be £900-£1200+ I think they are definitely one of the more expensive breeds0 -
pugs are great with children ours gets on well with my grandson who is 18 months but the problem is their price at 1200 but i can honestly say she is well worth it even though she can be stubborn. Before you point fingers, make sure your hands are clean !;)0

Another vote for the poor abandoned staffies here...I would love one myself but this house is too packed out with 2 mastiffs, 2 cats and numerous livestock type animals....Unfortunately my dogs will never be allowed to play with my children, purely down to their size (14 stone and 15 stone) but their temperament is wonderful...it's a shame really but never mind!!!
Now DS aged 18 months (Oh and I have a newborn too) is muttering on about a rabbit!!! wonder how long it will be before that rabbit hutch turns up in the back garden....'' A man who defends himself, has a fool for a client''0
