That's what polyalloy already advised you in post 2. It's simply a rolling contract with a one month minimum term. If they allowed one month with no notice beyond that, it would barely cover the cost of the dongle. No way out of that.
You would have done better to buy a PAYG dongle if you only wanted a few weeks usage.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

But there was no cost of a dongle, all they sent me was a SIM card as part of the contract.

I guess I got confused. I expected "one month contract" to mean the contract would end after one month. I asked them on this and they told me it's NOT a one month contract, it's a "month to month contract". Is there anything else I can do? I don't know anyone personally who would get any use out of it. I only bought it to tide us over until our home broadband got activated.

There is nothing you can do, you are just going to have to pay up for not understanding the contract you signed. As above you needed to give notice of cancellation on day 1. This will all be in your contract generally specified under cancellation rules.

There are two ways of constructing a software design: One way is to make it so simple that there are obviously no deficiencies, and the other way is to make it so complicated that there are no obvious deficiencies

Okay, I will call to cancel. But they can't really expect 30 days notice when it's only a one-month contract, surely?
It's a "one-month minimum contract" - it'll keep going until you give 30 days notice to stop. If you only want it for one month, you sign up on day 1, hand in your notice on day 2.
  • Just for future reference, I still didn't feel it was fair to expect a month's notice on a month's contract, so I called 3 back and asked to speak to one of their accounts and billing supervisors; he understood my position and, after I assured him I wouldn't be using the contract next month in any form, he agreed to reverse next month's contract fee on that basis.

It wasn't an easy task though, so I do recommend others cancel with at least 30 days notice when they're able.
