Am i donig the right thing salting my extra savings away to one side. i don't want to put it into the mortgage at the moment because then it just gets swallowed up (or bank uses right of offset to pay off the guarantee quicker). When interest rates rise I will need access to these funds to "top-up" the mortgage component of my budget IYSWIM as i make my way back to work.

Think i should start programming for that now?

Yep - absolutely the right thing. You need a safety belt of money - for practical and psychological reasons.

I would like to mention something else, if I may. My observation is that often people represent as 'the problem' the wrong thing. You have focused on 'the mortgage' but is this the problem? The ultimate test would be the answer to the question 'what is the solution'. No solution, no problem.

Getting back to 'the mortgage' - what is the solution now? To find 1000 times £125 - or in other words to make money. If you make enough to pay the mortgage is it a problem? Probably not.

What I am trying to say is that in a similar situation I would frame as a problem building sustainable income streams - to this there are solutions. Paying the mortgage off is just a trivial consequence...

I think you are doing the right thing as well. Having the money salted away gives you financial security which means you can ensure security for your children.

Having said that, wouldn't you consider "borrowing" some of it to pay your son's school fees if push came to shove? Having settled him in the Montessori system you want to maintain his educational stability as well.

You know a couple of years ago i would have only have asked the question "whats the solution" i never would have focussed on the problem after identifying it............

................mmmmmmm!!! think that day in the bank did more damage than i first thought.

i've pinned a sign up in my eyeline asking "whats the solution?"

thanks firewalker (you do know i'm gong to end up dedicating this book to you don't you??)

BTW was aiming for 300 pages of 25o words for first edit - today i will be half-way there:T:T:T

It is just flowing - so sorry if i'm not playing on here just as much for a few more days.

Oh I will (if push comes to shove) but still hoping my first donation is made in time.

this is the first time since that soon-to-be-forgotten day that i have owed anyone money - think yesterdays wobble was just aknee-jerk because the reality of it is that i can paythe other £450 , its just sitting in another pot:o

Off to write another couple of pages

Well done MG. Half way there is a fantastic achievement.

I've just about completed the planning stage, that will be done by Thursday, then i'll be hot on your heals x.
I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.

Hello all, sorry I've neglected you for a few days - got busy with life and decluttering my inbox, and am proud to say I have my unread emails down several thousand!
MG, you remain an inspiration! Keep writing!
Firewalker, I love the way you look at and explain things. I'd never thought of it before but focusing on the solution rather than what I perceive to be the problem is fantastic for finding a way forward.
Everyone else - go hit those 100 day challenges. :D
